That Half-Life 2 story leak wasn't so good, especially on the eve of the Steam pre-load release. Now, I bet Valve is going to delay the pre-load while it looks at what other possible stuff it might include by accident that the company doesn't want made public yet.

Today's question is Do you think this latest leak will cause additional Half-Life 2 release delays?

More Half Life 2 Leaks? 09:57 pm - Apache - games: action (10 comments)
Colonel Klink must be the official Commandant at Valve for security, as stories from HL2 World and Gamespot suggest that Valve included a file which contains all of Half Life 2's dialogue, and story for that matter, in the beta test for Counter-Strike: Source. Here's more:
The day before Valve starts preloading Half-Life 2 assets onto its Steam network, it appears the publisher may have made an embarrassing mistake. Several Web sites--most prominently HL2World.com--have reported that Valve accidentally released a file containing all of the dialogue from Half-Life 2 when it initially distributed the Counter-Strike: Source beta to cyber cafés last week.

According to reports, the dialogue is embedded in a .gcf file sent out along with the beta. Apparently, it was included for closed-captioning purposes and was overlooked because .gcf files aren't meant to be opened. Obviously, it was not meant for public eyes and contains numerous spoilers about the game, including its (surprising) ending.

Counter Strike: Source Pre-loading 05:46 pm - Apache - games: action (6 comments)
Valve announced that the Steam pre-loading for the beta test of Counter-Strike Source begins today for people who bought Counter-Strike: Condition Zero and holders of the HL2 ATI coupon voucher. If Gabe's earlier comments still stand, Half-Life 2 pre-loads begin tomorrow. Here's the juice:

Pre-loading of the Counter-Strike: Source Beta to owners of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero and the ATI\HL2 bundle begins today. On Wednesday, this second phase of the beta will open and the beta will be playable to this group.

ATI Catalyst 4.8 Released 05:31 pm - Apache - hardware: ati (0 comments)
ATI has released the new Catalyst 4.8 drivers for WinXP and WinXP/IGP Motherboards which roll in at around 26-29 megs. Check out the release notes to learn more about the changes. Here are a few niblets on what they improve (thanks Team Radeon):

Direct3D driver efficiency has improved considerably. Significant performance gains are noted in multiple "CPU-bound" cases, including 3DMark2001, Aquamark 3, Comanche4, Dungeon Siege, and Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004. Typical improvements are in the 1-5% range.

OpenGL driver efficiency is also improved. Older OpenGL games such as Quake III Arena and Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory show small improvement (1-2%) at low resolutions. Call of Duty framerates are up approximately 4%. Doom3 improves considerably more (as much as 12% on some product configurations) as a result of the same software efficiency improvements.

NWN 2 Details 04:08 pm - Apache - games: role-playing (0 comments)
GameSpot cranked out some new details on Neverwinter Nights 2:

We sat down with Obsidian president Feargus Urquhart, who was understandably guarded with details. If nothing else, the studio will attempt to capitalize on the greatest strengths of the original Neverwinter Nights--a game that had both a compelling single-player campaign and powerful editing tools to create custom adventures. But Urquhart added some cryptic remarks about how his own highly experienced staff not only has worked on RPGs for years, but has also played RPGs and observed the "direction in which role-playing games have been heading." Urquhart suggested that in some cases, classic RPGs may have more compelling features than more-modern games that have perhaps gone off in divergent directions.

UT2K4 Editors' Choice First Look 04:04 pm - Jeff Tom - games: action (0 comments)
GameSpot have slapped up a preview of the Editors' Choice version of Unreal Tournament 2004 from Epic. Here's a cut:

The only new onslaught map that we got a good look at was, according to Bleszinski, inspired by extreme sports games such as the SSX and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series. The map was basically a huge skate park with ramps big enough for vehicles, flaming hoops to jump through, and even some halfpipes to pull tricks on. There were no skateboards to be found (mod community take note), but we were more than a little surprised to see that as Bleszinski performed jumps, flips, and cartwheels in his chosen vehicle, statistics and scores for his last trick were flashed up on the screen.

Sid Meier's Pirates! Impressions 03:58 pm - Apache - games: action / adventure (0 comments)
GameSpot took an updated look at Sid Meier's new Pirates! game:

The most recent addition to Pirates! so far has been its revamped land battle system. Like in the original Pirates!, you can choose to serve one of the imperialist European nations that has settled the new world (like England, France, or Spain), but if you attack a town belonging to a rival nation, you'll enter into a land battle--a system that was recently revamped. The new system will feature simultaneous turn-based battles that resemble those in Meier's classic American Civil War strategy game Gettysburg!, only they will be more straightforward and less time-consuming. You and your rivals will have several companies of one or more of the following: infantry, pistoleers, cavalry, and artillery, which, in your case, are cannons you drag off of your ship, assuming you have any left. While you'll need to mind some strategic concerns, like the power and speed of cavalry against the relative weakness of infantry, for the most part, land battles will feature just enough depth to be interesting without tying you down in lengthy, drawn-out sessions--like pretty much every other aspect of the game, really.

Demonstone Impressions 03:55 pm - Apache - games: action / roleplaying (0 comments)
Also up at Gamespot today are some impressions of Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone, a cross-platform hack and slash RPG from Atari:

Even better news is that Demon Stone has really shaped up into a truly impressive, cinematic action experience. We've covered the game extensively, and you can read more about the three main characters, the triple-A voice talent, and the rewarding hack-and-slash gameplay in previous articles. Here we'll stick to the new stuff we saw, which will hopefully give you a feel for some of the epic, fantastic battles you'll be playing through during the game.

D&D; Online Impressions 03:49 pm - Apache - games: mmog (0 comments)
GameSpot greased up some impressions of Turbine's Dungeons & Dragons online:

That's right! Dungeons & Dragons Online will feature combat that you'll control in real time. This will let you run through hallways, click your mouse buttons to swing your sword, use your mouse pointer as a targeting reticle for aiming arrows, and use your movement keys to dodge incoming attacks. Turbine made this unusual decision with support and input from Wizards of the Coast, the publisher of the original Dungeons & Dragons, in hopes of creating a massively multiplayer online game with truly dynamic and engaging combat. The combat system is being designed to take advantage of the instanced dungeons, and since only a small party of adventurers will be in each dungeon, the game can provide more-responsive controls (rather than having to handle an area with 100 different characters that are all running around).

NPD's Online Gaming Stats 03:05 pm - Apache - games: general news (1 comment)
The NPD Group released a survey of sorts examining what today's 13-44 year olds are playing online:

The overwhelming majority of today's 13-to-44-year-old gamers have the ability to play games online and a good portion are taking advantage of it, but it's dominated by one platform - the PC, according to The NPD Group's recently released report, "Online Gaming: The Consumer Perspective for PC and Video Games."

According to the report, nearly 90 percent of respondents who play games via a PC/Mac or video game console use one of the three online-capable systems (PC/Mac, PlayStation 2 and Xbox). Of these gamers who use an online-capable system, 60 percent are playing online, with a significant percentage of both PlayStation 2 and Xbox owners using their PC/Mac to play games online instead of their respective console systems. In addition, roughly 10 percent of those who said they play online are strictly mobile-based gamers and do not use any of the three online-capable systems.

Prince of Persia 2 Preview 01:10 pm - Apache - games: action / adventure (2 comments)
The chaps at Computer & Video Games previewed Ubisoft's promising Prince of Persia 2:

Ubisoft, which is producing PoP2 in-house, has certainly listened to fans' criticisms of the original game and appears to have made every effort to address them. The three key areas it identified are the combat system, which it cited as "redundant, repetitive and superficial in depth", the lack of major boss battles and finally, improving the game's replay value. How has the company got on? Well a quick shufty at the game in action reveals... Well you'll just have to read on to find out more.

Online Worlds Roundtable: The Far East 12:43 pm - Apache - games: mmog (0 comments)
The RPG Vault has a new Online Worlds Roundtable with the topic Far East Online Worlds:

A few years ago, many Western gamers and media were surprised by the popularity massively multiplayer gaming had achieved in Korea. Recently, they were taken aback again to learn that mainland China has become by far the world's largest market. This month, we decided to take a look at the online world category in the entire Far East region, and invited a number of developers to share some of their knowledge and opinions.

Girl Gamers on the Rise? 12:37 pm - Apache - games: action (8 comments)
Girls like to frag, too is the latest edition of CNN Money's Game Over column which looks at increased participation of the female gamer segment at events such as QuakeCon. Here's some poop:

Women who did attend the fan convention for developer id Software's games (such as "Quake" and "Doom") were mostly patient girlfriends, often encouraged to come along so their lesser halves would have demonstrative proof of their smooth social skills.

"Some of these guys would say 'Hey I've got a hot girlfriend! I'm taking her to QuakeCon!'," recalls Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software. "Bad idea, dude. You just brought her into the biggest buyers' market in the nation!"

Tribes: Vengeance SP Preview 12:32 pm - Apache - games: action (0 comments)
The boys down at ActionTrip previewed the single player portion of Irrational's Tribes: Vengeance:

While I have only played several hours of the single player side of Tribes: Vengeance, I can say that I have been pleasantly surprised. What I have seen of the story so far is good, certainly better than what I had expected. Likewise, the way they have implemented the single player component from a previously multiplayer only game has surprised me. It has retained all the elements that made Tribes such an addicting multiplayer experience while providing game play that reminded me of the quality that Unreal Tournament 2004 offered offline. While the game is still beta and shows this by some problems with the voice-overs and long load times, I am thrilled by what I have seen so far and I am anxious to play more.

Counter-Strike: Source Impressions 01:15 am - Apache - games: action (4 comments)
Quite a few new Counter-Strike: Source impressions are online this morning from HomeLan, Telefragged, Driver Heaven, Games2XS, Gotfrag and Planet Half Life. Here's a shot from NoFrag's:

After some solid time playing Source, we're optimistic. Many of the changes implemented, though via the source engine, drastically improve the feel of the game. Overall, the pace is a bit faster than 1.6 thanks to the improved run speed, minimal fall walking delay and improved AWP. We can't wait until the 18th, when more serious players will be online and we can see how Source stacks up in a competitive environment.

Most Counter-Strike players, cynical as ever, expected Source to be the nail in the coffin for Counter-Strike as a skill game. Exactly the opposite, it feels very polished, and the mood is optimistic about the forthcoming release of our favorite game. While many changes are worthless eye candy to those who play seriously, the improved graphics and game play presentation will assist Counter-Strike in becoming more spectator friendly.

Thanks CS Nation.

I'm still gameless at the moment post Doom 3. I tried to play Dark Age of Camelot again, but it's not very much fun anymore after New Frontiers. Time for a code roll back (j/k)! Ah well, I guess not being hooked on that stupid game is a good thing(tm). Personally, off the top of my head, I'm looking forward to a few games right now, mainly Warhammer 40k, Guild Wars, Halo 2 and of course Half-Life 2. World of WarCraft looks mighty fine also, but me playing that is like giving a recovering sexaholic a bottle of viagra and an all access pass to the Mustang Ranch, so I might just have to take a pass on it.

Today's question is Besides Half Life 2, which games are you really looking forward to?
