Kaos on the Frontlines Mechanic[ Comment ] 14:50 PST | Pyros | Print News | Category: InterviewsOver at THQ UK is an interview with Kaos Studios' senior game designer Martin Raymond, who goes into much depth about the Frontlines mechanic, what it does, how it works, and how it makes the game unique. Here is a snippet from the interview:
Whats interesting about this mechanic is that the game focuses the action on the same frontline for both teams; the action is always centered within the frontline and you always get a choice between setting up defenses at your objective or joining a offense squad towards hostile territory.
The interview touches on a lot of useful points, so I would definitely recommend checking it out!
Also included is a video that explains the mechanic.
Frank has been in the graphics industry since 1989 and has held numerous titles including ab application engineer, senior designer, product manager, and now General Manger and Lead Designer at Kaos Studios. Forming Trauma Studios in 2005, Desert Combat was developed which became a success. Since then, Trauma Studios has joined THQ and has formed a new studio which you know as Kaos Studios.
Frank Delise has been behind several major projects in the past, including Desert Combat and the R&D; program for Battlefield 2. Needless to say, there is a lot of questions one could ask about the Frontlines vision and development process, so be sure to leave a question. And if you need to familiarize yourself with the game before posing a question, check out our multiplayer beta preview.
Kaos Studios Q&A; Sessions[ Comment ] 11:25 PST | skwerl | Print News | Category: Community NewsEver wonder what it is like to work at Kaos studios, or how Kaos turns a harmless RC car into an RC explosive bundle of death? Well, here's your chance to sort these questions out! Burning Truth is now hosting a Q&A; session with Frontlines developers, and they will be gathering your questions for the session. To sweeten up the deal, if you submit the question, you will be entered into a giveaway for some prizes. So, what do you have to lose? Be sure to participate!
What's interesting about this mechanic is that the game focuses the action on the same frontline for both teams; the action is always centered within the frontline, and you always get a choice between setting up defenses at your objective or going on offense toward hostile territory. Our loadout and role system will make sure to provide you with plenty of cool toys to make both offense and defense equally exciting.

The EMA11 fires projectiles to hyper velocity via magnetic acceleration, making it capable of destroying armored vehicles. The weapons official acronym of EMA means Electro-Magnetic Acceleration.
It is hard to decide what is cooler: a portable sentry gun that is armed to the teeth, or a powerful rail-gun...

GameSpot AU: The environments in Frontlines: Fuel of War seem to be quite destructible, especially in the single-player campaign. How much of it is scripted?
Joe Halper: It's all dynamic objects. The only thing that's somewhat scripted is the destructible objectives. So if you get to an objective and you see the icon of the C4 detonator, that's only scripted in that you know it's going to blow up. Everything else is pretty much you shoot it, it blows up--there's no scripting involved.

Each version is pretty strong in its own right. The console versions will support up to 32 players, and should support map-making tools and user created content, if the details over at Xbox.com are any indication. So while hardcore PC games might scoff and say that FPS games don't belong on consoles, I think Frontlines is showing how it is done right: by giving console users all the options and goodies that PC users traditionally get. So what version will you be picking up, Xbox 360, PC, or PS3?
The results to last week's poll can be found be hitting "Read More..." below.
The folks over at GameTrailers were at the recent E for All event, and managed to capture quite a bit of footage from Frontlines: Fuel of War. It appears the footage is from the single player campaign, so it is definitely something work checking out. Below are the links to each video. Enjoy!
The demo, delivered over Xbox Live sometime during December, will contain one single player mission. There will be no multiplayer aspect of the demo, as it is meant to get players familiar with the storydriven missions found in the single player and the new mechanics (such as the frontlines system). So if you want to try out the multiplayer, you'll have to settle for the PC beta at this point!
Farrell also lay blame on Unreal Engine as causing a number of key PlayStation 3 title delays, including its PS3 port of Frontlines. While the Xbox 360 and PC versions are still expected to ship on time, with a demo due in December, "Unreal Engine difficulties" have put the PS3 version "a couple to three months behind."
The article confirms that we should still be seeing the 360 and PC versions on the scheduled release date (January 08), but it seems the PS3 version will have to wait a few more months.
Update: The PS3 version of Frontlines has been pushed back to the fiscal 2009 year, meaning it won't release until after March 2008.
