| Data Cult (idea) | by vandewal | Let us all read now from the Book of Data. If you will all turn your books to proper page, the reading will begin in the second section:
And, lo, a great multitude of files both delimited and structural filled the incoming directories, and sang "Glory be to those who transform us into more standardized data sets, for they set us on the golden path toward salvation. We shall want for nothing under their watchful eye, and be guided by the loving hands of the mapping and the code."...

| hemi (thing) | by Transitional Man | In the automotive world Hemi is a slang or short term for engines using hemispherical combustion chambers, the most famous being Chrysler's 426 Hemi. Hemispherical heads are popular because they flow gases in and out of the head very easily, and valve size can be quite large for a given size of cylinder bore. However, the valve stems do not line up as they do in wedge head designs, making rocker arm design more difficult and complex. It is also harder to raise the ...

| More than we bargained for (personal) | by kanoodle | conversation Several months ago I was speaking to my wife on the phone. That happens every day while I'm on the road. Sometimes we speak several times, though usually for brief periods. Near the end of the conversation she told me that she had what was probably bad news. She told me of how in reading the local paper she had read the obituary section, and a relative of mine had died. She wasn't sure we were related, but when she repeated the name and age I told her that yes, he was...

| Scramble City (review) | by rootbeer277 | Scramble City was a 15 minute Japanese cartoon released in 1986 intended to fill the 20 year gap between Season 2 of the The Transformers and the movie, which took place in the far off, distant year of 2005, a wondrous future world of flying cars and plentiful energy. It introduced a few of the major characters who otherwise just suddenly showed up without explanation in and after the...

| Agnes Hungerford (person) | by aneurin | Serial Monogamist and Murderer
Born ? Died 1523
Although she was known during the final years of her life as the Lady Hungerford, it is no longer known when Agnes was born, who her parents were, or anything at all regarding her background and upbringing. As it happened there were good reasons why it was that her contemporaries may have decided to forget about all about her.
What is known of Agnes is that she was married to a certain John Cotell, and that...

| The Apparition in the Changing Rooms (essay) | by Andara | The Apparition in the Changing Rooms
A little over ten years ago, I used to venture with my fiancee (who later became my husband) to what was then reputed to be California's second most haunted site: The Queen Mary.
The Queen Mary has enjoyed a long and colorful history, from the advent of her becoming the Queen Mary (the designers had intended to name her the Queen Victoria), to her final berthing at the Port of Long Beach. She has...

| Make E2 Pretty: Voting |
by Two Sheds (2007-10-02 04:51:19) |
You can now vote on your favorite of 11 new themes for Everything2. We encouraged noders to come up with fresh, creative designs to modernize the look and feel of the site. The winning designer or team will win $250, and the runner up will receive $150. You can vote for your favorite new theme over at Everything User Poll or in the poll nodelet through October 8th. More competition guidelines and rules are available at Make E2 Pretty. Please let Two Sheds know if you have any questions. The winning theme may become the default theme for the website and new users, but winning the contest won't guarantee use of a theme as the default: that decision is up to a panel of super secret judges.

| E2 Community Developments, Summer 2007 |
by dann (2007-07-22 20:49:54) |
Update 29-JUL-2007: Based on feedback from noders and staff, I've make a few changes in the Staff Interactions section.
As many of you may have read, heard, and discussed, there are a number of changes and new developments in the works for Everything2. I had an opportunity recently to meet with Jack, clampe, and many of the staff in person and online, and discussed these developments for our community and our site. We've made good progress over the past many months addressing the implementation, scalability, legal, and staffing concerns. We believe we can make these things happen over the next few months with our coder staff. A full description of the new featuresets and developments is available at:
