Valve: We Won't Charge for Community Features
- 5 Comments
Taking a stab at Microsoft's Live service or just stating the obvious? When asked if Valve was going to charge for any of its online services, Erik Johnson looked at the dude funny and replied:
"We will not charge for The Steam Community and its features. Never even entered our mind. Part of it is to address the fact that when folks first bought Half-Life 2, Steam didn't offer many reasons to stick around. It didn't do enough for customers, and it didn't justify itself. So I suppose we're paying off a debt now," said Valve Project Manager/Engineer Erik Johnson in the latest issue of Games for Windows.
If you haven't played TF2 yet, the game has achievements and everything.

In other Valve news, I just saw an Orange Box commerical on Comedy Central. It's been a while since I've seen a PC game get advertising love like that.

Portal: Final Hands-on
PC.IGN got to taste the final version of Portal which goes live -- as part of the Orange Box -- next week.
In many ways, the nameless and nearly faceless protagonist of Portal is similar to Valve's male hero, Gordon Freeman. The test subject awakens in the Aperture Science facility with nowhere to go but forward, doing what is necessary as a victim of circumstance. However, unlike the Freeman, the test subject not only goes forward, but up, down, side to side, leaps chasms, and crosses entire levels in a matter of seconds, all with the help of a handy device that fires portals--one orange, one blue. With only two portals, the possibilities at the beginning of Portal seem quite daunting, but as the game progresses, gamers who learn to think spatially will find almost no end to the fun that can be had with simple walls and floors.

Hellgate London Interviews
The Unofficial Hellgate London website interviewed the lovely and talented Ivan Sulic and Matt Householder about their work in Hellgate London.
Flux: There were early quest concepts in HGL with faction quests. You're a Templar, the Cabalists don't like you and you have to do quests for them to get faction points and improve your standing with them. None of those exist in the alpha?

Ivan: Faction is not going to be present for launch. A lot of our faction stuff got scrapped because every time I wrote a faction dialogue, I had to do it 3 times. So there's got to be 3 different dialogues, and 3 different localization processes, and we also didn't have the tech worked out to give rewards like we wanted to. It was all just perks from a vendor. So, instead we focused on station faction. As players earn faction points they get access to a better vendor. Even that might go the way of the dodo, since it's just not interesting.

Ideally, it would have been awesome to have 3 dialogues and 3 incompletes and 3 reward dialogues for every single character based on which faction players chose. But then we took into account the long term integration of more factions and increasing that number of base dialogues. That seemed implausible. So, it's just something that got put on the back burner.

I hate to admit it, but I usually skip quest dialogue.

Need For Speed: ProStreet Multiplayer Impressions
- 0 Comments
PS3 IGN has posted some of their impressions of Need For Speed: ProStreet's multiplayer component. Here's a bit of it:

This setting carries over into portions of the online play in the form of Race Days. Instead of going at it with a handful of other racers at the same time, a Race Day lets you set up a series of events for other to play at their own time, with a scoring system used to rank everyone's performance. It's both more relaxed and tougher at the same time. While you can choose when you want to play and take things at your own pace, you'll need to be at the top of your game since everyone can try over and over again to move up the ranks. In other words, only perfection will take home the trophy.

When you load up a race weekend, you'll be presented with a list of cars to choose from for each event. This could be completely open, stringently tight or somewhere in-between. The Race Day creator determines which cars will be available to racers, so you'll have to pick from what's available. After this, you're taken to the main Race Day screen where you can check the leaderboards or head into a race.

Need For Speed: ProStreet is due out November 14th.

Just the Facts: Gears of War (PC)
While I'm downloading a 370 meg mystery file (maybe it's a demo, cough) at a blazing 42 KB/sec, dig into this new Gears of War for Windows fact sheet from Microsoft.
"Gears of War," a Games for Windows title, features the amazing tactical action and multiplayer excitement found in the critically acclaimed "Gears of War" for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system that sold more than 3.5 million units, and a variety of all-new content, including three new multiplayer maps, a new multiplayer game type, Game Editor, five new campaign chapters and DirectX 10 support.

"Gears of War" thrusts gamers into a deep and harrowing story of humankind's epic battle for survival against the Locust Horde, a nightmarish race of creatures that surface from the bowels of the planet.

With "Gears of War," Epic Games returns gamers to the massively scoped worlds, memorable characters, cooperative gameplay and hyper-realistic combat that gamers have come to expect from the franchise, plus a few new surprises.

*Frag-filled new content. "Gears of War" will feature locations that are unique to the franchise and the genre. Players will encounter all their favorite foes from the Xbox 360 version; however, these intense encounters will take place in some new environments and allow players to manipulate the new game modes and technology found only in the Games for Windows title. Boasting three new multiplayer maps, a new multiplayer game type, Game Editor, five new campaign chapters and DirectX 10 support, "Gears of War," will challenge and push the limits of the PC gaming experience and provide an unparalleled visual presentation.

*Engaging and disturbing cinematic story. Movie-like cut scenes, cinematic camera moves and in-game storytelling bring the brutal, emotionally charged narrative to life. Gamers control Marcus Fenix and his fire team as they pit advanced technology against the overwhelming and horrific Locust Horde.

*Unmatched online gaming. "Gears of War" will tap into the power of Games for Windows LIVE to deliver online matchmaking for its Gold account members. The service will enable gamers around the world to connect via their PCs, allowing players to experience individualized matchmaking, view player statistics, earn player Achievements, customize games and create personalized profiles.

*New Game Editor. The game will also feature the all-new Game Editor, guaranteeing new user-generated content in the future. The "Gears of War" community will be able to tap its endless creative potential to develop an unlimited number of user-created levels through complete access to the Unreal Editor. Using the new engine, players can now import custom artwork into the engine, create particle systems, scripted encounters, cinematics and more.

*Astounding visuals in next-generation gaming. "Gears of War" ushers in the next generation with incredible visuals, pushing DirectX 10 visual designs and bringing out the smallest details in the largest battle. Gamers experience a rich, dynamic world with a supreme level of detail. Characters come to life with unbelievable model quality and a physics-integrated animation system that has them truly reacting intelligently to events unfolding around them.

*Hyper-realistic and intense combat. In "Gears of War" the battlefield is a lethal place to foolishly stand out in the open is to invite an untimely demise. To survive, gamers must employ strategy, take cover using the interactive and dynamic environments, and suppress the enemy with blind fire, using their weapons and teammates to outwit and outfight their terrifying enemies.

*The information contained in this fact sheet relates to a pre-release product that may be substantially modified before its first commercial release.

    Postal III Interview
I was going to blow this off until I saw the concert art of the school girl / nun, but I digress... Gry.o2.pl interviewed Running with Scissors' Vince Desi about his upcoming Source powered FPS, Postal III.
Klecha (Gry.o2.pl): At the moment, what is the status of the game's progress and when will it be released?

Vince Desi (Running With Scissors): I'm very happy with the development schedule and the progress we have made so far. You have to understand that when you are using an engine for a new type of game like Postal III there are many custom features that have to be built from scratch, so its not as easy as just building another clone of Half-Life 2. By early next year we will know better, so right now I would say end of 2008 is a possibility.
