BioShock BioLocked To Two PCs
Uh-oh, the official BioShock forumers are up in arms because BioShock is supposedly limited to two installs, at which point the game becomes useless and you can never ever use it again. However, having spoken to a senior member of 2K Games we can reveal that the above is bullshit - to prevent piracy the game is restricted to two simultaneous installs. Let's lay it out:

  • You install BioShock on PC #1.
  • You unlock it via the net-based activation.
  • You install BioShock on PC #2.
  • You unlock it via the net-based activation.
  • You install BioShock on PC #3.
  • You go to unlock it, but no! You may be an evil space pirate hell bent on installing the game on your grandmother's computer for free! No unlock for you evil doer!
  • You're not an evil space pirate so you go home and uninstall the game from PC #2.
  • The worker bees in PC #2 send an alert via the net to 2K's HQ and reimburses you with one install credit.
  • You return to Gran's house and install it on her POS PC.
  • You attempt to unlock BioShock again and hey presto, it unlocks!
  • You start the game but are booted back to desktop because Gran forgot to buy a Shader Model 3.0 GPU at the bingo :(

There you have it, everything's AOK, and yes, all digital and boxed versions of the game have this piracy prevention device included. So there.

From poem to novel to film to game:

You are Beowulf, legendary Norse warrior with the strength of 30 men. Arrogant, self-serving, and lustful for gold and glory, you journey to Denmark to destroy a bloodthirsty beast wreaking havoc on a frigid land. But evil persists, and you succumb to its lure of even greater fame, quietly maneuvering to claim the Danish throne. As King, you must face the consequences of ambition, even as war descends on the realm. Lead your thanes into battle, slay the Titans of a dying age, and crush the enemies that threaten to annihilate both your kingdom and your people. Operation Flashpoint 2 Screenshots & Trailer
- 3 Comments
Could this possibly be real footage from the game? If so, colour me impressed.

Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising was today announced as the full title for the return of the leading name in modern military simulation gaming.

Codemasters also revealed an explosive video trailer for the game on its booth (Hall 4, F01) at Games Convention 2007, Leipzig, Germany.

Coming in 2008 for major console platforms and PC, Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising marks the long-awaited return of the total conflict simulator. It will challenge a new generation of players to survive the chaos and rapidly evolving situations of military combat in a new and contemporary theatre.

"Set on a vast oil-rich island, located off the eastern coast of Russia, north of Japan, Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising's fiction occurs during a time of tension between Russia and China over the island's disputed ownership," explains Andrew Wafer, Brand Manager for Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising, at Codemasters.

"The game will open as Chinese forces launch an offensive and, referencing the title, as the dragon rises over the island, players will find themselves in a situation that is set to flare up into a flashpoint like never before."

As depicted in the trailer, soldiers, weaponry and military transportation will be authentic and realistically detailed. The game environment will be a comprehensive simulation of a real world location, densely packed to create a rich and challenging tactical environment.

Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising is in development at Codemasters Studios utilising an evolved variant of Neon technology, the studio's proprietary middleware.

Empire: Total War Announced
Incredible graphics and real-time 3D sea battles are just two of the additions in the latest Total War title:

SEGA Europe Ltd. and SEGA of America, Inc. today announced Empire: Total War, the revolutionary new instalment of The Creative Assemblys wildly successful, multi award winning Total War RTS franchise. Empire: Total War will maintain the series genre leading 3D battles, grand turn based campaign map and rich historical flavour while for the first time introducing 3D naval combat into the series.

Empire: Total War is set in the 18th century, a turbulent era that is the most requested by Total Wars loyal fan base and a period alive with global conflict, revolutionary fervour and technological advances. With themes such as the Industrial Revolution, Americas struggle for independence, the race to control Eastern trade routes and the globalisation of war on land and sea, Empire: Total War promises to be amongst the richest and most dynamic PC RTS games of all time.

Empire: Total War will see the debut of 3D naval combat within the Total War franchise. PC Gamers will be able to intuitively command vast fleets or single ships upon seascapes rich with extraordinary water and weather effects that play a huge role in your eventual glorious success or ignominious defeat. After pummelling your enemy with cannon fire, close in to grapple their ship and prepare to board taking control your men as they fight hand to hand on the decks.

Along with the revolutionary introduction of Naval Combat, Empire: Total War will see further enhancements to the Total War series signature 3D battles and turn based campaign map. Real time battles will pose new challenges with the addition of cannon and musket, challenging players to master new formations and tactics as a result of the increasing role of gunpowder within warfare. And the Campaign Map for many the heart of Total War will see new improved systems for Trade, Diplomacy and Espionage with agents, a refined and streamlined UI, improved Advisors and extended scope taking in the riches of India, the turbulence of Europe and the untapped potential of North America.

Empire: Total War is a huge revolutionary step for the series. Were delighted to introduce true 3D naval combat, something that adds a totally new dimension to Total War games. commented Mike Simpson, Studio Director at The Creative Assembly and the father of the Total War franchise. Were genuinely excited about what were achieving with the naval battles and also by the scale of the improvements being made to the core of the game the land battles and the campaign. This will undoubtedly be the biggest and best Total War game weve ever made.

Empire: Total War has already been secretly in development at The Creative Assemblys Horsham studio for over a year and is priming its forces for a release in 2008.

I know, BioShock isn't out in Europe 'til Friday, so I'll try not to yap about the game in detail on the front page. If you want to spoil, or be spoiled, go read this thread instead.

I gotta say, Vista isnt as bad as the rep it has on the boards. I haven't installed or played any old XP games on it (just the "Games for Windows" branded titles), so maybe that explains it. Everything has "worked" so far with little or no effort. If I wanna play old games, I can do that on my old PC just fine. So right now, I have BioShock, Company of Heroes and Supreme Commander. Oh, and the Hellgate London alpha once I redownload and install that badboy. Stranglehold (remember that game?) is coming out next week, I think, too.

Today's question:

How long do you think until Vista becomes "mainstream" for gamers?

BioShocking Widescreen Issues
Yikes. We haven't had this many emails about a story/problem in awhile. Thanks to everyone who sent word pointing out the issues with widescreen resolutions (or lack thereof) in the BioShock demo. Here's the poop from Micheal:
Here is a fascinating post at the widescreen gaming forum which illustrates the problem with widescreen support in Bioshock. Despite Chris Kline stating that widescreen wouldn't be altered or cropped in the game many months ago the widescreen IS clipped with the FOV being the same as in the 4:3 ratio keeping the width of the view the same and effectively chopping off the top and bottom of the image as seen in the screenshot. Note that games for windows and X360 require widescreen support, but 2K has chosen to simply support widescreen resolutions without correcting for the proper field of view!
I wouldn't flip out just yet. It seems like a simple thing to fix.

Mafia 2 Announced!
First screenshots and what not below (no release date though):

2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., today announced that it will publish Mafia 2, a sequel to the original Mafia title that sold more than two million copies worldwide and helped popularize the gangster genre. Featuring a deep mobster-driven narrative packed with both behind-the-wheel and on-foot action, Mafia 2 is the sequel fans have been clamoring for. The game is being developed by Illusion Softworks, developers of the original Mafia title, for next generation consoles and Games for Windows.

Like the original Mafia title, Mafia 2 immerses players in the mob underworld of a fictitious late 1940's-early 1950's scenario. Players will easily become engaged in the game's cinematic Hollywood movie experience with strong, believable characters in a living, breathing city. By fusing high octane gunplay with white knuckle driving and an engaging narrative, Mafia 2 looks to be the industry's most compelling Mafia title to date.

"As the original Mafia was a big success, we are excited to leverage the power of next generation console technology to create an all-new experience, while embracing the elements that resonated with the previous game's fans," said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. "The 'wow' factor of Mafia 2 is definitely the benchmark-setting visual quality and action that you expect to see only in Hollywood movies."

BioShock Now Available, But Not Through Steam
- 36 Comments
2K Games let us know that BioShock is now available to buy in stores, with PC versions unlocking for play, unless you pre-loaded via the likes of Steam, which has another three hours to go until B-Day:

2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., announced today that BioShock is now available in North America for Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows, and will be available in Europe beginning August 24. Developed by 2K Boston and 2K Australia, BioShock is a "genetically enhanced" first-person shooter that lets players do things never before possible in the genre.

Gamers enter the game as a castaway in Rapture, an underwater utopia torn apart by civil war. Caught between powerful forces and hunted down by genetically modified "splicers" and deadly security systems, players have to come to grips with a deadly, mysterious world filled with powerful technology and fascinating characters. No encounter ever plays out the same and no two gamers will play BioShock the same way.

"With the release of BioShock, we are redefining the shooter experience by providing players with the freedom to decide how to proceed and which actions to take," said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. "The teams at 2K Boston and 2K Australia have captured the essence of this underwater world and brought it to vivid life in the art design and open-ended storyline. Welcome to Rapture."

In the decaying art deco underwater city of Rapture, players can turn everything they encounter into a weapon, biologically modify their body with plasmids, hack devices and security systems, upgrade weapons, craft new ammo variants, and experiment with different battle techniques.

"The development team has been working on BioShock for years to push the limits in every way possible, so we are excited for gamers to finally experience BioShock as we've always imagined it," said Ken Levine, President and Creative Director of 2K Boston. "We delivered on our promise of bringing gamers a unique and enriching first-person shooter experience that not only challenges their capacity to adapt and survive, but tests their values and commitment to the inhabitants of Rapture."

As for folks in Europe, they've got to wait until Friday.

Mmmm, the new PC is nice. The BioShock demo runs as smooth as lubricated silk on it, so I can't complain. It's almost too fast... Anyhoo, I'll probably pop into Fry's when it opens this morning and grab a boxed copy of the game. From what I heard, the retail version unlocks like 6 hours before the digital distribution flavor, so that's a plus. The cable guy is coming this morning from 10am-Noon, so if he's done fixing my ailing digital cable by then, so we'll see what's up. Of course, it's working perfectly now, so here's to hoping it breaks again ASAP...

Today's question:

Are you going to rush out and grab BioShock today?

Any plans to *cough* call in sick to play? *cough*
