Marvel Comics is just as old as its rival DC Comics. However, Marvel did not come to prominence until the early '60s when Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and others created a new batch of super heroes who had personal dilemmas teens could relate to. In 1961, Lee and Kirby introduced the world to the Fantastic Four and not long after Spider-Man and the X-Men. Marvel comics quickly grew and eventually overtook DC as the #1 comic book publisher in the world. Despite having to file for bankruptcy a decade ago, Marvel remains on top. Thanks to two widely popular movie franchises in the X-Men and Spider-Man and numerous licensing deals, Marvel is enjoying its greatest success and a revitalization of interest in its properties.
