2007 PC Games Preview @ VE 03:15 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: General News (16 comments)
As promised, here is our 2007 PC Games Preview taking a look at a bunch of hot upcoming games coming out on the PC this year. Each game included has 1-7 new screenshots as well (i.e. - we posted five new 4000x3000 resolution Crysis shots for your viewing pleasure). If your favorite game wasn't included, odds are its respective maker didn't submit any new screens for the feature, or we didn't think it would be a 2007 release. Either way, its good clean fun for the whole family!
It's an understatement that 2006 was at best a hit-or-miss year for PC games. Sure, there were a few hits, but most of the games simply missed their respective release dates. The good news is, all of the stuff we missed in 2006 spills over to this year (and perhaps beyond).

Hot New Supreme Commander Beta Version 01:30 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Real-Time Strategy (1 comment)
Gas Powered Games continues to polish up Supreme Commander. Here's what is new in beta 52:

Based on user feedback, the latest beta version has polished all of the following and more:
  • Game balance: Nearly every unit in the game has been balanced, re-balanced and balanced yet again, all based on your feedback.
  • Technical issues: The "black screen" crash and frustrating keyboard freezes have been addressed. We've attacked many networking issues and even worked with antivirus software developers to alleviate many concerns. We've tracked down and annihilated most desync errors. We've added tons of optimizations and have stomped on many, many bugs.
  • Rankings and Player Ratings: Thought your wins weren't being recorded? Not so! While we worked on display issues, we were storing all the back-end data on ranked matches. Now, all player rankings and ratings should be completely up-to-date. Come back and see where you rank! New features: Arranged Teams allow you to quickly jump into ranked games with friends. GPGNet chat rooms are more active than ever. And the GPGNet Knowledge Base offers up buckets of help and information.
To get the latest updates, simply connect to GPGNet, just like you did before. Your GPGNet account information (and its beta key) is still valid, ready and raring to go.

If you've uninstalled the beta, you can always download and install the latest version of the beta client free from FilePlanet.com.

I haven't played it in a few weeks, think I'll snag this latest version and give it a go.

Peter Moore's CES Update 01:26 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Consoles: Xbox 360 (0 comments)
A wee bit too long to slap on the front page is Peter Moore's CES address where he outlines some of the things Microsoft is looking to do this year and beyond. Here's some poop:

Where We're Going

There was plenty to get excited about from the stage at CES for both Xbox 360 and Games for Windows.

The launch of Windows Vista marks the most significant event yet in our commitment to revive the Games for Windows brand. With gaming and graphics at its very core, more robust family settings, and games explorer, Vista is undoubtedly the best gaming OS ever made and a clear win for PC gaming enthusiasts and casual players alike.

For Xbox 360, we sold in excess of 10.4 million Xbox 360 consoles in 2006 and remain on track for 13-15 million units shipped by the end of FY07. We demonstrated our ability to turn our thought leadership into market leadership. Now in 2007, our challenge is to use our position as market leader to continue pushing the innovation envelope and connecting consumers ever more tightly to their games, their friends and their lifestyle.

2007 will quite simply be the best year for great games in Xbox history. As Robbie announced earlier this evening, this year we'll more than double the 160 games available today, with a truly remarkable amount of AAA quality titles to keep gamers engaged throughout the entire year including Lost Planet, Forza Motorsport 2, Crackdown, Mass Effect, Too Human, Shadowrun, Bioshock, Guitar Hero 2, Dance Dance Revolution Universe, Assassin's Creed, Blue Dragon, Project Gotham Racing IV, Grand Theft Auto IV, and the most anticipated title in gaming history … Halo 3. This incredible slate of titles will keep gamers of all interests racking up achievements throughout the year.

I drank a four-pack of Red Bull yesterday and I'm feeling pretty extreme at the moment. I'll let you know how that works out later once I can feel my fingers again.

Today's question:

What game pumps you up the most?

UT 2007 Not Dumbed Down for Consoles 01:02 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Games: Action (25 comments)
The chaps at C&VG; scored a quickie interview with Unreal Tournament 2007 Producer Jeff Morris (thanks Beyond Unreal):

Can you assure PC fans that UT2007 won't be dumbed down for console?

Morris: It won't be dumbed down in any way, shape or form. Console players crave the same fast-paced action that UT specialises in.

In related news, there won't be a lightning gun in 2007.

EA Aiming For Hellish Summer 10:27 am - Andrew Burnes - Games: Action / Roleplaying (8 comments)
A new press release says that we'll be playing Hellgate: London this Summer:

Electronic Arts Inc. and NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc. today announced a summer 2007 worldwide ship window for the highly-anticipated online action RPG Hellgate: London™, the first original PC title from premier developer Flagship Studios.

"We are all committed to making Hellgate: London absolutely the best game possible," said Bill Roper, CEO of Flagship Studios. "The anticipation surrounding the game is immense and we are looking forward to its launch being a truly worldwide event."

Hellgate: London combines the depth of role-playing games and the action of first-person shooter titles, while offering infinite playability with dynamically generated levels, items, enemies and events. The player creates a heroic character, completes quests, and battles through innumerable hordes of demons to advance through experience levels and branching skill paths. A robust, flexible skill and spell system, highly customizable appearances, and a massive variety of randomly generated equipment allow players to create their own unique hero.

Roper doesn't exactly have the best history when it comes to release dates, so I wouldn't start getting too excited.

Gears of War Bonus Pack Dated 01:42 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - Consoles: Xbox 360 (21 comments)
IGN Down Under has the scoop that the much-anticipated bonus pack for Gears of War will be released this week:

Microsoft today announced that new downloadable content is ready to go for Epic's monster Xbox 360 title Gears of War. From early Thursday, January 11 in Australia, and January 10 in the States, gamers will have access to a new content pack on Xbox Live Marketplace. And yes, it's free. Huzzah!

What's under the hood? Two new maps for a start. The first, Raven Down, takes place on the bombed out city streets surrounding the crash site of a Raven Helicopter. With densely clustered car wrecks and detritus providing ample cover points, the map sees Delta Force make their way in from multiple access points to search for survivors. The second, Old Bones, looks to take on an almost survival horror tone, with a majestic old museum as the setting. The Locust Horde want to take it apart, further eradicating any record of humanity off the face of Sera, while Delta Force, naturally, will do anything to stop that happening. Also in the pack, an introductory video hosted by Epic's CliffyB.

They have some screenshots of the new maps too.

The 2007 preview will be coming your way this evening. Just waiting on a couple stragglers to send in new screenshots. After that, we can update the new poll too.

    Today's question:

Since Bill Gates said the Xbox is basically a PC, would you be more inclined to play Xbox games if it had a keyboard/mouse interface?
