TK-422 Peter Jackson's Halo Project

by Grimzo

At X06, we learned that Peter Jackson is going to be working on some form of interactive movie/game for the 360 that takes place in the Halo universe. This could prospectively be a very exciting idea if done correctly. What follows is my superior Droid recommendations on how to best execute this game/movie project.

It's not a game!

Don't even pretend to make it into a game! I don't want to play half assed puzzle games or random on-rails shoot-em-up sequences, or diversionary button mashing bits, or Active Time Battle moments (a la Shenmue). Make it true interactive entertainment instead, and don't even bother trying to add gameplay mechanics to it.

Are you serious TK-422?

Hells yeah! I swear by the stupid PSP squirrel that my idea is not only logical, but is the best way to deliver Peter Jackson's vision. You have no choice but to allow me to explain. Peter Jackson is a fantastic storyteller. He knows how to capture emotions, how to capture individual moments of personal action, even in large scale battles. However - wouldn't you want to know what else is going on? Consider this from a Lord of the Rings perspective. Remember that crazy battle sequence from the Return of the King at Minas Tirith? There was so much going on at once. You had the Pippen/Gandalf Arc, you had the Faramir/Denethor arc, you had the foot soldiers on the frontlines, you had Aragorn and friends coming in, you had the Orcs, and a bunch of other stuff all happening at the same time.

Wouldn't it have been nice to be able to walk around and control the camera during this battle sequence? What if you wanted to quickly snap to what Aragorn was doing on the boat before he entered the fray? What if you wanted to count how many kills Pippen got? Maybe he had a few while he was off-camera? What about the Eowyn and Merry? What were they doing while Gandalf was confronting the Nazgul? Imagine a "game" that lets you move around the battlefield and observe what's going on any of the fronts? Better yet, what if it let you cut and edit your own version of the film and share it on LIVE? Now imagine doing this in an epic Halo conflict?

This would allow Peter Jackson to focus on what he knows best, and it lets us gamers look at these large scale conflicts and parallel stories from whatever perspective we want to. This would allow for many multiple viewings because you can literally ensure that it's never the same exact experience twice. With enough dialogue and scripted sequences and a large enough scope, this could be a very compelling product. Here's another twist? What if you could affect the outcome? What if you had the ability to say "In this front, I want to reinforce the Covenant army with a bunch of invisible elites - how would that affect the outcome of the battle?" You add those armies from your toolbox, press play, and see how the A.I. handles the new parameters. This almost lets you tell your own story.

It's not a game, but it's a real sandbox environment that lets you control the storyline through experimentation. To make a game of it, maybe they can include a specific set of parameters that must happen in order to get the "true ending".

Think of it as a highly interactive video choose your own adventure where there are a bunch of dynamic things happening.

I don't know about you puny humans, but I'd be the first in line to buy a Peter Jackson produced Halo product of this type.

Random Blips

  • Doom on XBOX Live Arcade is the best thing Microsoft has done since the Arcade launched. This opens the door to many PC classics. I want to see Wing Commander, Descent, Duke Nuke'm 3D, Quake, Hexen, and many more games make the arcade jump. We'll talk about the games this Droid wants to see the most in a future installment of this column!

  • Why are World War II games so successful? Company of Heroes is essentially Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War with a WWII skin and some additional gameplay features. Why is it so much more compelling than its sci-fi counterpart?

  • After playing Star Fox Command, my logic circuits started computing the following: Tie Fighter on the DS would be very sweet. Can someone make this game already?

  • Anyone remember an ancient game called THE TEMPLE OF APSHAI?

    Heroes (1.2) "Don't Look Back" - Review

    By: ZotQuix

After hearing the hype and then watching the first episode my major sentiment concerning 'Heroes' could be described as cautious optimism. There was art, and I don't just mean the prophetic paintings of Isaac Mendez (played by Santiago Cabrera), there was humor - honestly Hiro Nakamura beats Hurley for comic relief any day, and there was style, Mohinder Suresh walks around with his own hip soundtrack but you can tell he's waaay too good for Bollywood. The story is something we were only beginning to glimpse, and it looked like it *could* be intriguing, but really we were only getting the briefest of character sketches. At the same time, I was worried. Had this particular vein of genre been overtapped and were we going to see cliches and implausible concepts leak into this comic bookesque tale that could detract from one's suspension of disbelief? The characters were dangerously close to caricatures and when people start talking about how we only use 10% of our brain as a base premise foreshadowing the explanation of why we can have superpowers, I begin to expect the worst.

So when this Monday rolled around, I was absolutely blown away. Stories began to gel, the characters were built and deepened and became compelling, and there was intrigue, yes crazy mad intrigue. Intrigue and horror. Did I mention the horror? This feels like something...good.

'Don't Look Back' began in the same tone and pace as 'Genesis'. The separate threads continue to be worked: Pete Petrelli and his brother's relationship, Suresh's search for his father's truth, Niki Sanders coping with her problems and the unanticipated and incomprehensible resolution to those problems. All good enough to sustain our interest. Particularly the weirdness surrounding Niki grabs one's attention. She is losing bits of time out her life and the more she tries to investigate matters, the more things get surreal. After these threads progress a little, we are suddenly thrown into a new thread, and introduced to Matt Parkman (played by Greg Grunberg), a police officer with lofty aspirations and a gift he is just becoming aware of. It was a strategic decision to place this scene here, as there has been some indications that previous versions of the pilot actually had Greg's character in them. And my response is, it really works.

This new character seems to be about as compelling as the rest, hearing thoughts the thoughts of those around him as whispers. Engaging, and well done, but nothing earth shattering or unexpected. Then we see what was done to the victims. People who are pinned to a wall with kitchen utensils is pretty grisly on its own, but people who are frozen, and have their brains removed, that's new. I'm even willing to forgive the overly simplified conclusion where Parkman is arrested. In the real world, the people around him would be pretty freaked out and watch him like a hawk, but I don't see them actually arresting him.

From here I just continued to get more and more absorbed. Niki Sanders life is like some sort of psychological potboiler. Simply following the map with drops of blood on it and knowing she has corpses in the trunk of the car is crazy enough, but the shovel that is waiting for her in the middle of the dessert and finding someone has already been buried would make for a decent movie just by itself. And finally we have Hiro, neck deep in trouble. The crime scene had me in a state of disbelief. I like Isaac. Not so much as a heroin addict, but the concept of a psychic artist who's abilities manifest when he goes on a bender is pretty mind-blowingly cool. And then he's dead. Frozen with his brain removed. Un-freaking-real. And I'm thinking that this is going to be the last we see of Mr. Mendez (it occurred to me that maybe Grunberg was replacing Cabrera). I completely bought it. Fortunately it was not so, but then the even bigger revelation that some sort of disaster would hit in a very short period (just over a month) was staggering. And the fact that the air date coincided with the date Hiro came from was kind of neat too. I'm wondering if we're getting the resolution to this particular crisis on November 8th or at least that week (the 8th is actually a Wednesday).

People have mentioned J. Michael Straczynski's 'Rising Stars' in comparison to 'Heroes'. Also they've mentioned M. Night Shyamalan's 'Unbreakable', which I think is pretty apt. One comparison I haven't heard is that most famous of all graphic novels, Alan Moore's 'Watchmen'. If nothing else, the New York disaster evokes thoughts of that title, but more importantly, it is one of the original sources where "What if superheroes were real?" is explored. All these vectors intersect in 'Heroes', and it looks like there is something else new here as well. The show controls mood tightly and the episodes are constructed with a certain sort of intentionality that is rare even amongst quality television. My only hope is that there is a definite payoff at the end of each season, and that question that are raised don't wait until the twilight of the series to get closure (if they get it at all). Still, that's a concern for later. Right now, I'm just going to enjoy my favorite new show of the season.

Garbage Disposal Maker Sues NBC Over 'Heroes' Scene
zap2it.com is reporting that the company that makes In-Sink-Erator garbage disposers is suing NBC, claiming that an episode of the new show "Heroes" makes the product look bad.

Appliance maker Emerson filed the lawsuit in a St. Louis federal court Monday, seeking to block rebroadcasts of the "Heroes" pilot. In the episode, a high-school cheerleader (Hayden Panettiere) who has the ability to withstand injury sticks her hand into an In-Sink-Erator while it's running, mangling her fingers (which return to normal within a few seconds).

Emerson's suit claims the scene "casts the disposer in an unsavory light, irreparably tarnishing the product" by suggesting that serious injuries will result "in the event consumers were to accidentally insert their hand into one."

    'Jericho' Star Teases Upcoming Bombshells
tvguide.com is reporting that thus far on CBS' Jericho (Wednesdays at 8 pm/ET), the titular Kansas town has been roped off from the rest of the United States by a series of nuclear attacks, and last week the residents braced for the arrival of acid rain. Meanwhile, a secretive good Samaritan named Lenny recently was on the receiving end of a Morse-coded message that he conspicuously shared with no one. Is all on this series not what it seems? TVGuide.com took that question and others to Sprague Grayden, who plays Skeet Ulrich's possible love interest, Heather.

    'Lost' Action Figures Coming
scifi.com is reporting that Disney and McFarlane Toys will unveil a line of action figures based on ABC's hit SF series Lost in an autograph event at the Toys "R" Us International Flagship store in New York on Nov. 6, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. ET.

The event will feature an as-yet-unnamed Lost cast member and McFarlane Toys creative force and Spawn creator, Todd McFarlane, who will autograph purchases of the Lost Series 1 action figures. Tickets for the event will be announced at a later date on Spawn.com.

    'Star Trek' Auction Webcast Live
scifi.com is reporting that History.Com, the Web site of the History Channel, will present a live webcast of 40 Years of Star Trek: The Collection, the upcoming official auction of items from the five Star Trek television series and 10 feature films, Oct. 5-7, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2-6 p.m.. ET each day, from Christie's auction house in New York.

    'Heroes' Flies High For NBC
scifi.com is reporting that NBC's superhero drama Heroes, which came in with low expectations and no high-profile names attached, is shaping up as a hit for the peacock network, Variety reported.

Heroes, whose second episode this week earned a 5.5 rating in adults aged 18-49 and nearly 13 million viewers overall, saw its viewership decline just 7 percent from its strong series premiere, beating its broadcast rivals in most demographics, the trade paper reported.

No other first-year drama this fall has rated higher in the 18-49 demographic with its second episode than did Heroes. Of all NBC dramas to premiere in the past three seasons, only Medium rated higher in week two.

    -------

    Abrams Talks 'Lost'
scifi.com is reporting that J.J. Abrams, co-creator and executive producer of ABC's Lost, told SCI FI Wire that he will be more involved creatively in the third season, co-writing the Oct. 4 season premiere, directing an upcoming episode and laying the groundwork for the full season.

"I miss being as actively a part of it as I had been in the first season," Abrams said in a conference call to journalists on Oct. 3. "And so, for me, writing the first episode with [co-creator Damon Lindeloff] was just an absolute joy to get to write those characters again and be inside the heads of those characters. And as it goes on, the season, especially with where it goes, I look forward to not just directing an episode down the line, but I feel that we have a structure that's in place for the remainder of the year."

Also, a special note and thank you to all the readers who helped Sci-Fi Brain crack the top blogs list of IGN at #11. Thanks, and we hope to keep bringing you everything you love, even more, and keep climbing up those rankings.

    Smallville (6.1) "Zod" - Review

    By: AeloraLane

There are times when Smallville tends to miss in both plot and action, and then there are times when it completely shines, proving the potential within. Its sixth season opener was one o those times to shine, when Smallville came through as the show it is and was meant to be.

At the end of last season, Brainiac prepared Lex’s for Zod’s possession, while creating complete chaos the world over by taking away our computers. By refusing to kill his friend, Clark unwittingly released Zod into the world, at which time he took over Lex’s body, tossed Clark into the Phantom Zone, and took Lana Lang as his girlfriend. The guy is nothing if not a fast worker.

The sixth season premiere opened with Clark falling clear into the Phantom Zone, a kind of muted-looking desolate desert (I’m dying to know if the same set was used for Abydos on Stargate: SG-1) where he was immediately attacked by, well, phantoms. Imagine that! Phantoms in the Phantom Zone! Saved by a beautiful young woman named Raya, he learns that she was Jor-El’s assistant back on Krypton. Before their world was destroyed, Jor-El sent Raya into the Phantom Zone, believing that with the help of a special pendant he gave her (the ‘S’ shield, natch), that she would be able to survive there. And surviving was better than dying. As much as Clark appreciates hearing about his parents, he tells her that he needs to get back to Earth to stop Zod from destroying everything he loves.

Back on Earth, Chloe and Lionel develop a plan of their own (will someone please explain to me why Chloe so easily trusts a man who tried to kill both her and her father??) to confront Zod, but not before Zod grabs a stunned Lana and flies away from Metropolis. The Kryptonian criminal takes Lana to a warehouse that is housing the mysterious black spaceship that originally brought Brainiac to Earth, and he immediately dissolves it into an oddly-shaped crystal that apparently is all he needs to change the Earth’s landscape to look like Krypton.

Meanwhile, somewhere in the Arctic, Martha awakes in the plane to find that they’ve crashed. Lois is, conveniently, badly injured, and the pilot is completely missing. Looking ahead, Martha notices a beautiful ice structure rising up in the distance, and quickly gets herself and Lois to the protection of the Fortress. Upon entering, the voice of Jor-El immediately greets her. He tells her that Clark has been banished to the Phantom Zone, and that it is up to her to kill Zod. When she realizes killing Zod means killing Lex, Martha balks at the notion until Jor-El points out to her that if she doesn’t, all of Earth will suffer. Taking the weight of responsibility onto her shoulders, Martha agrees to do it, and before sending her back to Smallville, Jor-El thanks her for the wonderful care that she and Jonathan have shown to Kal-El over the years.

Zod drags Lana to the mansion with him, where he immediately resets the computer systems around the world, making everything better (I’m left wondering what the entire point of that was to begin with other than to show regurgitated footage of various real-life riots). He then begins accessing the Pentagon so as to take control of a satellite above the Earth and begin reshaping the Earth’s crust into Krypton. During this time, he also informs Lana that while he detests the inferior humans, he plans on keeping her around anyway to beget him a few heirs. Finally accepting that this isn’t really Lex, Lana attempts to stop him with a steel rod, which he quickly slams through her hand, pinning her to the wall in one of Smallville’s more graphic and memorable scenes of all-time. He needs a place to keep her while he wanders off to do Zod-things.

At the Daily Planet, after Lionel takes off to try and see what he can do about killing his son, Chloe runs into old flame, Jimmy Olsen, who just started working at the paper that day. It’s a fairly joyful reunion considering the world’s ending outside. There’s another joyful reunion (one which makes me cringe) back on the Kent farm, where Lionel and Martha console one another before discussing how to kill Zod with the knife first given to Clark in last season’s ender. Just as Lionel makes the decision to do it, Lana shows up, having bravely pulled the rod from her hand, and determines that she is the only one who can get close enough to Zod to kill him. Realizing there is little choice left, Martha hands the knife over to Lana to save the world.

Up in the Phantom Zone, Raya is leading Clark toward the portal that will only activate for members of the House of El to escape. Unfortunately, just as they reach it, Na-Mek and Aethry, the Kryptonians who appeared at the end of season four, attack them. Raya pretends to have been working with them all along, before tossing Clark her pendant and turning to fight them. Clark runs to the portal, looking back just in time to see Raya stabbed but there isn’t time to help her as he is sucked through the portal – along with about six others! Oddly enough, the portal knows to send him right back to Smallville.

When Zod returns to the mansion, it’s to find that the future mother of his children has escaped. Apparently giving barely a thought to her, he continues about his business, just as Lana walks back in. Coldly, she tells him she considered his offer, and has decided to agree to it, if it means saving her own life. She plays the seductress, promising him many children, and even succeeds in getting him onto the couch where we get a glimpse of a very different Lana Lang as she prepares to kill the man she loves. Unfortunately, Zod isn’t quite as taken with her as she seems to think, and stops her before she can drive the knife through him, tossing her across the room.

Clark arrives just in time for the reshaping of Earth’s surface to begin, causing major earthquakes all over Kansas, and nearly killing Martha and Lionel as they huddle together. Once everyone is safe, Clark learns that Lana has gone with the knife to kill Zod, and he arrives just in time as Zod is strangling her. At the sound of Clark’s voice, Zod is less than pleased. This begins the battle many viewers have been waiting for – Clark versus Zod. With some fabulous special effects, Clark and Zod zoom through the air as they fight, landing hard on the ground, in a copse of trees. Zod then begins pounding Clark’s head into a boulder. Unfortunately for him, he tosses Clark away, giving him time to heal and think. As Zod approaches him, uttering the infamous words “Kneel before Zod”, Clark fakes him out by submitting, holding out his hand, and zapping him with a Kryptonian joy buzzer. Okay, so it was the pendant given to him by Raya but still… Somehow, this magnificent piece of Kryptonian engineering knows not only to send Zod back to the Phantom Zone, but seems to totally wipe out all of the changes made to Lex’s body by Brainiac prior to Zod ever entering him, and wipes Lex of all memory prior to the changes being made. Yeah, I’m not buying it.

So Clark saves the day, using brain, as opposed to brawn, against Zod. Is this the beginning of his future self?

Meanwhile, the rest of the cast tries to get back to normal. Chloe introduces Clark to Jimmy, thereby totally negating the kiss they shared at the end of last season. Lex remembers nothing, though immediately begins to feel guilt over the destruction he caused while not being himself. And Lionel… is apparently back to being Lionel. Yay for that!

Sadly, the beginning of what appears to be the theme for this season also takes shape: Clark is on his own.

The Good, the Bad, and the Woohoo!

Michael Rosenbaum, in his performance of Lex as Zod, brought it. He wasn't Lex in any shape or form, not even my vision of Lex in the future. And he wasn't Alexander (from Onyx), and that over-the-top evilness that only needed a mustache twirl to complete it. He was just cold, ruthless, and so very amused by Lana's attempts to beat him, and yet... he wasn't. I loved that there was this underlying detachment to everything that was going on. The expression on his face when he walked into the study and found her gone, and then it was just like "Eh", and he went back to what he was doing because he doesn't have to care. This is Zod. He doesn't really need to react too much of anything because he's so powerful and good at being ruthless, and using his power that he doesn't need to care about who tries to get in his way.

Best of all, was getting to see the contrast with Lex the moment he was back to himself at the hospital. Of course, the sheer terror in his eyes as he realized that he was responsible for what he was seeing around him (although he just had to be confused as hell by that point since he had no recollection of his powers). And then the quiet determination that appeared when he realized he could be close to losing Lana over what Lex-as-Zod did to her, and he absolutely is not going to allow that to happen.

I do have one wish, and I fear that Smallville more than likely won't take this storyline and run, even though it's perfect. In the comics, whenever Metropolis or other parts of the world were destroyed, directly or indirectly by Lex's doing, while Superman always knew of his involvement, the majority of the time, the rest of the world did not. Lex took these opportunities to rebuild everything at those times. He's rebuilt Metropolis countless times, and whenever this occurred, he gained the love and respect of the people. This is exactly how a man like Lex Luthor is voted into the presidency. This would be the perfect time for Smallville to hand Lex the ability to move into a position of complete power, above that of Lionel. To rebuild Metropolis, rebuild Smallville, put the Luthorcorp money into everything it takes to help the world get back on its feet. Lexcorp could even emerge from it all, so that people never forgot it was Lex and not Lionel who made everything better. While a handful of people know for a fact that it was Lex's meddling with Fine that caused it (though Clark's own hand for refusing to kill Lex also shared blame), the rest of the world see's only that Lex Luthor is taking his billions and using it for a good cause. In the end, Lex has the power he needs to become one of the most dangerous men on Earth, and Superman's true nemesis is born. Unfortunately, I fear that even if Smallville is planning on taking such a direction, they'll do so only minutely, and we'll likely have to read about it online.

Lex loses all memory... again. Come on, people! Okay, yes, you don't want Lex to know that Clark has super abilities but... why not?? The hell? At this point, he'd have to be a complete and UTTER moron to not know a damn thing. He's collected an entire room of evidence (which, I admit, he seems to have completely forgotten about since dismantling it), he knows about the ship, he knows about the aliens, he knows Clark had a connection to the caves - he knows so much and yet I'm still supposed to believe he knows nothing?? Not to mention, Lex has known Clark = Superman in the comics more than once. The world did not come to an end. This universe is already so AU from comics/movie canon, there is no reason not to keep going. Seriously, how could Lex possibly not recognize Clark as Superman in the future unless they completely mind-wipe his entire time in Smallville before the series is over. Which, I admit, I keep expecting them to do... But yeah, while I knew this would happen, I still think it's the lamest, most ridiculous piece of BS ever.

On the other hand, by saying everything was out of Lex's hands from the moment he was taken into the ship, also means that his whole speech to Clark in the barn in Vessel wasn't totally Lex. So we can wipe out his claiming that he's evil and always been evil, and we can ignore the whole him only being friends with Clark so he could take what Clark has. Most of his behavior throughout that episode was a little off from Lex - a little too open with expressing things Lex normally holds close to the vest - so by wiping it out as not having totally been him makes sense. It also makes me enormously pleased. Yes, they aren't going to come out and say it, but what other conclusion can be drawn? Otherwise, you have to allow Lex to remember everything up to the point that Zod took over. Smallville can't have their cake and eat it too, no matter how much they try. Either that was Lex, or it wasn't, and by erasing his memories from the point of being in the ship says it wasn't Lex.

Okay, now, there is a part of me that would like to believe Lex hasn't forgotten everything. The way he was examining that piece at the end certainly didn't look like a man who was completely confused. It did look like a man who was wondering what he could do with it. Also, how much do I love how that scene totally paralleled the Pilot, with Lex examining the Kryptonite necklace while sitting at his desk? It was a perfect, full circle moment, and I really can't wait to see where they go with Lex's digging into what he was as Zod.

The other standout performance was from Kristen Kreuk, and I have positively never been as absolutely thrilled by her performance as I was last night. She really amazed me. In Vessel I was stunned by the depth of her terror and fear as she watched Lex get sucked into the ship, but that was nothing compared to her acting in Zod. She has just really grown in her abilities since the first season. I always think back to when Lana heard about Whitney's dad, and she couldn't even cry convincingly - she had to cover her face and there were these really pathetic and bad sobbing sounds coming from her. It was horrid! That performance, compared to last night, is like night and day! Her scream when Zod impaled her hand was absolutely convincing, and then her cries as she was pulling it out. The determination in her face when she knew she had to kill Lex-as-Zod to save the world and then, the most heartbreaking moment of all for me - the tears rolling down her face as she prepared to do it. I mean, there Lana was, seducing Zod. She was on his lap, kissing him, tossing her hair back, being full-on convincing about how she was going to give him heirs - and then, she tucks her face away as she reaches for the knife and there are tears because she knows she has to kill Lex! The man she loves, the man she is basically saying goodbye to at that moment with her kisses. That just about did me in. That was definitely one of the most powerful moments from Kristen for me out of the entire series.

I've come to really enjoy this newly emerging Lana. There's truly a spark of a survivor in her, and that was something that Lex admired about his second wife, Helen - the survival of the fittest instinct within her. It ties back to the selfishness that we've seen Lana exhibit over and over again through the seasons, a trait she shares with Lex. I think if the rest of the world hadn't been in danger, if people she cared about weren't going to die, Lana would have done what was best for her in the end - and that would have been to submit to Zod. She would have spent the rest of her life attempting to reach Lex, believing he were still in there, while also being the concubine of the world's powerful ruler. Her continued curiosity from the onset, her desire for Lex to save the world with his powers before she knew it was Zod - Lana is ready to use whatever power is given to her, as long as it doesn't hurt the innocent. That's where, in the end, her relationship with Lex may splinter, if Smallville takes him to his full-on evil self of the future, which they really shouldn't do until the end of the series. Lana is more than willing to do whatever is necessary to those she considers evil (let’s not forget that she has been responsible for two deaths so far) - and that, at this moment, includes the aliens who hurt her. She's got an instinct for ruthlessness in her that isn't evident in Martha, or even Lois. (We have seen glimpses of it in Chloe, which is, I think, another reason why both Lex and Lionel respect Chloe.)

I really couldn't have been more pleased with Lana’s storyline throughout the episode. Her arrogance in thinking she could take Zod on was truly in character, and again I say, nothing was more touching that her kissing Lex goodbye, and the tears she was hiding as she grabbed the knife. Yes, it was blatantly stolen from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but it worked. I'm also glad that, at the end, when Lex found her in the hospital, she was fearful of him, but not totally repulsed. Obviously, if someone spends a day slamming rods through your hand, throwing you across the room, and strangling you, you're going to be a little wary of them when they come up and ask how you're doing. Zod doesn't have to still be in Lex for her to remember what happened. That's the beauty of possession, I guess. Added angst. The moment Lana realized it was Lex she softened toward him, immediately realizing that he was going to take all of the guilt of what happened onto himself. (God, Lex doesn't need anymore of that!) Now, I can only hope she filled Lex in on everything that happened, including the powers he had, and the name of the planet Zod was from.

Overall, I thought everything flowed very well - especially for a storyline that they wrapped up so quickly. Although, I have to admit, with the Smallville's writers’ sometimes limited imagination, I couldn't imagine them drawing it out much further. It's not like they would have ever shown Zod raping Lana, which was perfectly in his power to do if he really wanted heirs that badly. It's not like they would have shown the rest of the world being torn apart, since Metropolis and Smallville are the center of the world. It's not like they could have dragged out the Zod/Clark fight any further without it just becoming boring (okay, aside from watching Rosenbaum and Welling wrestle around together).

Kudos to Smallville for showing us the Phantom Zone and even having the Phantom Zone contain phantoms. I was in love with every moment of it. The phantoms attacking Clark were truly frightening, and the lighting inside the Zone was just gorgeous. It seemed as desolate and truly empty a place as I can imagine for a penal colony. The horridness of the place also gave yet another glimpse at Jor-El, as really being quite ruthless toward criminals - and not in a good way. Yet another contrast with Clark as future Superman and how I don't think he could ever be as ruthless as his father in that manner. For all of the things they've done badly with Jor-El, and as many times as they've retconned him, I think a glimpse of the Phantom Zone falls in line a lot more with the tough-love he seems to exhibit toward his only son. Clark's kindness obviously comes from Lara and the Kents.

I did love their way for Clark getting out of the PZ. That was very well written, and Clark accidentally releasing others with him was inspired. Talk about building an entire season's storyline in one quick moment! Now, I hold out hope that they'll maintain the momentum they've created for theirselves this season.

Zod's plan was a tad bit too simplistic for me, and annoying for the fact that it was almost the exact same plan Lex had in Superman Returns. Kudos to the writing team for being original - NOT. Plus, why destroy the entire human race when you obviously need slaves to help rebuild, and you certainly can't just have one wife giving you children. You’re going to need a few or your entire bloodline is going to eventually grow weak! Sheesh. I think Smallville’s creative team just doesn't really have a great hold on the mind of a true villain.

The Chloe/Jimmy stuff was adorable. However forgettable it might have been in light of the bigger things occurring, it was still entertaining to watch. She obviously has a bit of a hang up on him, which works, since he was her first. While watching, I was a little annoyed when Clark showed up and Chloe was suddenly all "Oh, that kiss?? That was nothing!" But then, when I thought about it, the sudden change made total sense because Jimmy was the guy she slept with. Jimmy is definitely going to come first in her mind because Clark has already turned her away more than once, and while Jimmy may never be Clark, he's always going to have a special place in her heart. Plus, she totally lit up when he was around. It was really cute. Seemed kind of out of place for how dark the rest of the episode was, but adorable to see just the same. We'll see if Jimmy continues to be just the comic relief, or have an actual purpose for being on the show.

How much love do I have for the battle between Clark/Zod??? Not only were the FX fabulous (that flight through the air, twisting and turning as they held on to each other, was positively GUH worthy!), but I loved that they showed how inexperienced Clark is in such battles at this point in time. Yes, he's fought people who've had his powers before, but he's never fought someone who knew how to use those powers to their advantage, and was as ruthless as Zod. When Zod was beating his head into the boulder, it was just perfect. He wouldn't let up. He had the upper hand and he was using it. The only mistake he made was tossing Clark aside and giving him time to heal, time to think and prepare a plan. Obviously, Zod wouldn't have done that had he even had inkling that Clark had the pendant from Jor-El/Raya.

The points they raised toward Clark on his way to becoming Superman hit home a lot more in this episode than ever before. His loneliness, how cut off he is becoming from everyone, who he is having to rely on his own strength and choices now for how he wants to deal with things, as opposed to listening to Jonathan or Jor-El direct him - I loved every moment of that and I really hope it continues for the rest of the series. My problem is, I want to like Clark, and it seems like this show has done it's best to make Lex fans not like Clark. Odd, that.

Lionel is just getting on my nerves. I swear his storyline has gotten more convoluted and ridiculous than anything Lost has given its fans. The worst part is, after hearing that John Glover never realized Lionel wasn't actually blind, means that Glover doesn't even know what's up with his character, and is leading us all down the path of confusion because there's no where else to go. Its one thing to have a character pretending to be good/or really be good for the other characters on the show, but to continue that for more than two years for the audience?? Stupid. And annoying. Now, I still firmly rest on the side of the fence that says Lionel is, and has always been, evil. I think Jor-El's influence over him last season where the only times he was being good. Now that Jor-El seems to be gone, Lionel is in complete control again. I do believe that each time he behaved sad about killing Lex last night was completely faked for the sake of Chloe and Martha - I think Lionel would like nothing more than to have Lex out of the way at this point.

Lionel writing out the Kryptonian and 'power'. Is Lionel lying about no longer having a connection to Jor-El? Or is he lying about remembering the Kryptonian? Is it possible that Lionel is still Clark's biggest threat since he knows everything? That's where I'm leaning. But again, Lionel needs Lex out of the way before he can truly move into a place of power again. His son has become too strong, and Lionel knows it. And fears it.

The Kryptonian criminals now running around Earth. Will the phantoms that were released take over other people? Will we get known DC criminals this way? Will Clark continue to use the pendant to send them back to the PZ?? Inquiring minds want to know!!!

This week: Clark develops a cold. Or does he? And Lex is kidnapped… again.

    Sci-Fi Brain Editor's Note

Comments here do not fall on deaf ears. I've paid attention to all those comments left throughout our threads, and we're going to try and do all that we can to make this as user friendly as possible.

Some people have stated they don't particularly like the new blog format, but that is an issue that is beyond our control. Could the website look possibly come back? Who knows. If you want to help in that department, visit the site every day for the latest stuff, post comments, add us to your friends, tell others to read the site and do likewise, and help us crack that top blogs list on IGN to make your voice heard and show people want Sci-Fi Brain back as a website.

Meanwhile, I'm going to be working on a project, which hopefully I'll be able to use starting Monday of next week, but if not still next week hopefully, in which users should have an easier time navigating about and finding the articles they are looking for.

Also, we have those reviews of shows coming as well. Smallville and Jericho will be covered on here as well as Battlestar Galactica and Lost as well. Trust me, nobody is waiting on Lost and Battlestar like me, and I'll be continuing those review duties for Lost this season as well. Beyond those, we are also looking for any other articles you might like to see as well.

Sci-Fi Brain was made by the fans and for the fans, and so you can contribute to the site as well. If you would like to be a writer for the site, with an article idea you'd like to do, or something like movie reviews, manga reviews, book reviews, etc, send an email to jiggyj[at]scifibrain.com and we'll work on making you a part as well to the site.

    Brainstorm #30

    by Sci-Fi Brain Staff

This week, the Brainstorm crew discuss Heroes, the best second in command officers, and Grimzo falls asleep!

**Word of caution, a few spoilers regarding next week's episode of Heroes to follow!**

    TOPIC ONE: HEROES

Grimzo I know many of you have seen this months ago, but now that it's out, what do you all think? Is this the next big thing?

Proteus4 Ok, I've seen the pilot three times now and while I've enjoyed it each time I fear that it will fall into the LOST zone.

asher_cross I got to see the advance pilot, and I am still impressed with the quality of the show. I think it has incredible potential.

Grimzo Well this show has one thing that Lost doesn't - a point.

Grimzo We know where they're going with this show- with Lost, we're still clueless about where they're taking it.

Proteus4 I don't know if this is going to be the next big thing to be honest. The series is attempting to capture the success of both Lost and the X-Men which may not translate well to television. This vision is very Rising Stars though... and that is a good thing.

Proteus4 Where are they going with this show?

asher_cross Yeah, true - I'm just wondering if/how these people are going to get together, or join forces, and if so, against what?

Proteus4 I want them to join forces sooner rather than later. Like in the first 10 episodes.

Proteus4 Somehow... I think that is going to be dragged out.

Grimzo What I'm curious about is this: is every character here a hero? Is anyone of the characters from the pilot really a villain?

Grimzo I'd love to see the two brothers pit against each other

asher_cross I think that could be possible, or even Ali Larter's character.

Proteus4 Anyone of them could very well be a villain and some of them will probably sit in that "shade of gray" for a very long time.

Grimzo Also the "we have to stop this" bit - who's going to start it?

asher_cross I highly doubt they'd make the Japanese kid, the nurse, or Invincible Cheerleader would be pegged as heroes.

Proteus4 There were bits cut out of that pilot that pointed to an evil group.

Grimzo Now I'm assuming the evil group is a group of supervillains

Proteus4 The pilot was originally planned to be 2 hours and now I wonder if some of that will end up in episode 2.

    asher_cross That's entirely possible.

Proteus4 From what I remember... they do have super powers.

Proteus4 Remember that Greg Grunberg's character was completely cut out of the pilot as well.

Grimzo see, what would be really smart is if they threw a swerve like this - every one of these characters is pushed as a hero - but in the end, we find out that they are the villains.

asher_cross Wasn't there another "hero" that was cut out? The smart kid's dad, who can walk through walls?

Grimzo And the real heroes are people we meet later.

Proteus4 Did you see the preview trailer for what is to come?

Grimzo I have not actually - what did they show?

asher_cross That would be cool, but highly unlikely, and probably only cool in hindsight.

Proteus4 Gruberg's police officer character can read minds.

Proteus4 The Japanese guy finds a comic book with himself on the cover.

Proteus4 Apparently these people are being portrayed in comics.

asher_cross Hmm, interesting. I'm not sure if I like that.

Grimzo Really? that's kind of cool actually.

Proteus4 I don't know what to think but it does add another dimension that is kind of surprising.

asher_cross I think it takes away the grounding in reality this show has, giving it that X-Men movie feel.

Proteus4 Yeah, it was the first thing they showed in the trailer and I was like... what?... that's from left field.

Grimzo I like the idea of the mystery. Mysteries work well - and what makes this mystery cool is that it doesn't have to be the main plot driver

Proteus4 I just want this characters to come together and not have to jump continuously from one story to the next.

Grimzo I don't mind a slow buildup - but it has to go somewhere fast.

Proteus4 So who was everyone's favorite hero from the pilot?

Grimzo The Japanese guy. hands down.

asher_cross I'm torn between Hiro and the cheerleader chick...she has potential.

    Proteus4 Mine was the cheerleader.

asher_cross But that's just because I think her power is cool.

    Grimzo The cheerleader is Wolverine

Proteus4 Although, I found it odd that she thought her super powers were going to make her life more complicated.

Grimzo All she needs are claws and some adamantium.

asher_cross I'm just wondering how she'll put that power to use (sure, she can heal quickly, but can she really fight?)

Proteus4 She doesn't have to do anything with them and they aren't going to affect her school work if she doesn't want them to.

Grimzo Her motivations arne't all that clear - she has a family that she doesn't understand, and these powers don't seem all that intrusive.

Proteus4 She is invulnerable and may be the most powerful of them all.

asher_cross Then again, typical teenager finds something wrong with them, the insecurity meter goes through the roof.

Grimzo Now if she was growing horns and fangs - that would be a problem - but great healing skills? Who wouldn't want that?

Proteus4 Of all the characters, the cheerleader felt the most developed.

Grimzo She did, but at the same time- her motivations aren't very clear. What does she want?

asher_cross True, and I wonder how the whole "my dad is the ringleader of the conspiracy' arc is going to work out.

Proteus4 I was actually kind of bothered by the boy doctor who wanted to fly.

Grimzo The male nurse you mean?

Proteus4 He become annoying after a while.

Proteus4 Ah, yes... he was a nurse.

Grimzo I hope he becomes the villain - like Baltar from BSG.

Proteus4 I hope so to. He REALLY wants to have super powers so it would be more interesting if he didn't have any and resented his brother because of this.

asher_cross Maybe he's jealous that he doesn't get the flying power, and starts working against them out of jealousy.

    asher_cross Man, beaten.

Grimzo Maybe he'll get the flying power too. I think he'd make an awesome bad guy

Proteus4 Well, if they are going to play it like that... it would be far better if he felt that he was doing the right thing but was tricked into working against his brother.

Grimzo Male Nurse goes Postal! Brother of Governer wannabe!

asher_cross That or he decides that doing the right thing really HAS gotten him nowhere, and he starts getting selfish

Proteus4 I have a feeling he has some sort of psychic powers... maybe something like Xavier. He talks about sensing his brother's feelings at some point.

Grimzo Possibly - he's obviously connected to his brother.

asher_cross Oh, that's the likeliest thing. But I feel like he's only atuned to his brother, which would basically make him his brother's sidekick.

Grimzo Sidekick is boring- he should be the main villain of the piece. That's what I'd do if I was writing.

Proteus4 Yeah, I would make him a villain but not the main one... at least not for a while. He needs to grow into that role.

Proteus4 For now, they should establish a villain and an organization that the heroes have to deal with from various angles... bringing them together.

Grimzo Well there's been a considerable time investment on that character- we were led to believe that the show was going to revolve around him - he's too important not to be the main villain.

asher_cross I think he'll start to resent his brother, but start to find his own role in the team and become one of the leaders.

Proteus4 Yeah, they did invest a lot of time into him. Remember, the character of Jack on Lost was originally supposed to die in the pilot episode and ultimately the pilot revolved around him.

Grimzo Right now, I think they need to still take an "Unbreakable" approach and make us understand these characters well - before revealing if they are good or bad.

Proteus4 I don't know what kind of point I am trying to make... but just throwing that out there.

Grimzo The Lost comparisons keep coming - let's just ask the question straight: Is Heroes going to be better than Lost this year?

Proteus4 I do want a driving force to be introduced quickly though. Something to connect these characters.

asher_cross I doubt it'll be as memorable as Lost, but it'll have its niche.

Proteus4 Hmm... doubt it. Third seasons are usually the best for most TV shows. Heroes still feels like it has to find itself.

Grimzo I think we know what the driving force is - they have to stop the burning of NY.

asher_cross Heh, it'd be funny if that was just a red herring.

Proteus4 Yeah, but out of all the characters only about 3 of them have seen the painting and they don't really understand its meaning.

Proteus4 It could very well be. I hope it is not though... some things should be straight forward.

Proteus4 A group of heroes have to stop New York from being nuked - that should be season 1.

Grimzo I'm not sure if I agree with the both of you - Lost has a tendancy to drag things a little too much. If Heroes gets to the point quickly - we might be looking at a better show this season.

asher_cross It'd be nice to not have arcs run too long - I agree with the idea of maybe a seasonal villain/crisis.

Proteus4 I don't want to see things dragged out at all.

Proteus4 Agreed, a season villain/crisis works best for me. Buffy formula!

Proteus4 I am surprised more shows don't use it.

asher_cross 24 does, to an extent.

Grimzo I have a feeling that they might take their time on this one. As long as they tell a good story and gets to the point quickly this season, the show will do fine.

    Proteus4 True... 24 does.

    asher_cross I like that idea.

Proteus4 Now, will they capture an audience?

Grimzo Given the hype this show's been getting, I think they will.

asher_cross I certianly hope so. I think it has more potential than Jericho, etc.

Proteus4 I've seen shows with tons of hype fail.

Grimzo But Monday is a pretty competitive timeslot - When 24 returns, it will be tough to beat it.

Proteus4 Hell... Snakes on a Plane failed... that had the hype train from heaven.

asher_cross That's because one's voice is carried further on the Internet than anywhere else.

    Proteus4 Good point.

Grimzo Anything that we didn't like at all about the pilot?

asher_cross There's probably something, but I can't think of anything.

Proteus4 I didn't like the nurse all that much... but I already mentioned that.

Grimzo I want to see the origins of the villains soon

Proteus4 The characters also don't seem all that interesting yet. I know they have a lot of people to introduce and very little time to do it in but I need a hook... I need to find these people interesting and so far I can't say I have.

Proteus4 Well, besides the cheerleader and Hiro!

Grimzo That's true, the only character i really connected with was Hiro

asher_cross there are a lot of characters, and some shows have a lot of trouble keeping focus on so many leads.

Proteus4 Lost did a fantastic job of bringing its characters to life quickly.

Grimzo I just hope that they don't turn Hiro into a "comic relief only" role.

Proteus4 I remember debating over Locke's true intentions from the very beginning.

asher_cross He could get annoying, and quick.

Grimzo Well, Lost didn't get to every character right away.

asher_cross I really hope Mohinder doesn't have a power. It'll be nice to have a "hero" who isn't one because of genetic mutation.

Proteus4 No it didn't but it was smart about it. Introduce some characters at the beginning than slowly bring in the rest.

Grimzo I see Mohinder as Xavier without the mind-reading skills.

Proteus4 I wonder if Stan Lee watched it?

Grimzo Ask him next time you get the chance!

    Proteus4 I shall.

TOPIC 2: BEST AND WORST SCI-FI FIRST OFFICERS

asher_cross As far as best character: Kira. I think they gave her a lot of depth, and she was a great character. Now most effective? That's a good question.

Grimzo To reiterate, we're looking for who you think the best sidekick characters are from any sci-fi series. They don't have to be militaristic to qualify.

asher_cross Tigh is fun, but he's not a very good commander.

Proteus4 Spock. Well, that is an obvious one.

Grimzo I think Tigh is an awesome first officer - Just don't let him run things on his own.

Grimzo Spock without saying - Chewbacca works for me too.

asher_cross I'm always perplexed by Spock, who's pulling double duty as chief science officer and first officer - is Starfleet that understaffed?

Proteus4 I think Tigh is decent at best but I'm pretty sure others could do a better job. I think people like him because he is tough.

Proteus4 He can pull double duty of he chooses. He is the foremost expert on science and happens to fit the qualifications for first officer. I assume you can do both.

Proteus4 Of course, I doubt you could be chief engineer and first officer.

Grimzo He's tough and he has no time for coddling. It's fun to see. And he loses an eye this season! Everyone knows how we feel about eye patches.

asher_cross And monocles over eye patches.

Proteus4 Does he lose the eye or is it temporarily injured?

Grimzo Indeed. Going back to Spock - he works as a first officer mostly because he's such a great balance against Kirk.

    Grimzo And he's Kirk's buddy.

Proteus4 Spock, Kirk and Bones are a great balance against each other.

Proteus4 Each brings a different viewpoint to the table.

asher_cross True - but in terms of practicality, does that happen in the military often?

Proteus4 I don't know if I ever got that feeling with Ryker and Picard.

Proteus4 Well, nope... it doesn't and shouldn't. You can tell someone officially that you disagree with them but Bones goes overboard.

Grimzo Not really, but starfleet isn't military per se.

Proteus4 I think Kirk overlooks a lot because he trusts his judgement.

Proteus4 Yeah, Starfleet feels more collaborative in nature but you will see them pull rank at times.

Grimzo What about other sci-fi series?

Grimzo Scully can be seen as Mulder's first in command, right?

asher_cross Ivanova was pretty cool, too - she had spunk.

Proteus4 Rose from Doctor Who. Yeah, I'm the only one here who watches it but she was 1st mate on the TARDIS.

Proteus4 Ivanova was always very similar to Kira for me.

Grimzo Rose is great, but isn't she leaving the show?

Proteus4 Shh... season 2 doesn't start until this week in the states. They will hang you for saying that.

asher_cross Frankly, as much as I like Kira, she's much whinier than Ivanova. She was tough as nails, but still had her vulnerabilities.

Proteus4 The Doctor has had plenty of companions over the years and she is one of the best.

Proteus4 Nobody mentions Chloe from Firefly...

    asher_cross You mean Zoe right?

    Proteus4 Bah... Zoe.

Proteus4 Well, it is the thought that counts.

asher_cross She's pretty good, but she didn't really have much personality, as least not as much as the other characters.

Proteus4 That reminds me... I should sit down and watch the series again. I am already forgetting their names.

Proteus4 Maybe if Fox gave her a chance to develop some personality!

    Proteus4 FOX. Grr Argh!

asher_cross Heh, we all know the story.

Proteus4 Speaking of the Browncoats... are they still fighting for the series to return?

    asher_cross I wouldn't be surprised.

    asher_cross Everyone's gotta have a cause, I suppose.

    asher_cross Is no one talking?

    Proteus4 Grimzo has disappeared?

    asher_cross I suppose so

    FINAL THOUGHTS

asher_cross Um, watch Heroes and Tigh is a pretty fun character.

Proteus4 Remember that Doctor Who Series 2 starts this Friday on Sci-Fi and you can purchase series 1 now! Go... make haste!

Proteus4 Also, see Jumper in 2007. I'm in it!

    asher_cross What's that?

Proteus4 A science fiction movie starring Sam Jackson and Hayden Christensen.

    asher_cross Ooh, you have a walk-on?

Proteus4 I am in a scene walking behind Hayden and have to react to him tele-porting to another location.

    asher_cross Cool beans!

Proteus4 I have this WTF face.

    asher_cross Teehee

Proteus4 Well, we shall see if it actually makes it into the movie but it was fun to do.

Proteus4 Hayden seems like a pretty decent guy.

Proteus4 Sam Jackson is tall and they gave him hair for the movie. Grey hair.

asher_cross Oh, I'm sure he is. He's a good actor too, he just has had the misfortune of getting famous from movies that have a poor director.

Proteus4 Is Hayden's acting bad or was George Lucas' directing really that bad?

    Proteus4 Who destroyed Star Wars!?

Proteus4 Maybe, that should be a topic for a future Brainstorm.

asher_cross I've seen Hayden in Shattered Glass and Life as a House - kid's got talent.

    Grimzo Whoah, Grimzo returns!

Proteus4 I haven't seen him in anything outside of Star Wars... so I can't really judge.

Proteus4 We are on final thoughts here.

asher_cross But I honestly think Lucas doesn't really know how to direct people. When Sam Jackson and Liam Neeson turn in horrible performances, I have to wonder.

Proteus4 I thought Liam did a decent job... but I know he is capable of better.

Grimzo Hayden was great in that movie with Kevin Kline

asher_cross Life as a House, yes. I loved him in Shattered Glass, where he plays the reporter.

Proteus4 Grimzo... who is ultimately to blame for the failure of the prequels? Next Brainstorm?

Grimzo He's a good actor - too bad lucas didn't know how to use his talents.

Grimzo Lucas himself to blame for the prequels. He's a control freak and needs to learn to let others write dialogue for him.

    Proteus4 McCallum?

Grimzo But we can explore why next Brainstorm.

    asher_cross Sounds good to me.

    Proteus4 Yeah, should be interesting.

    Proteus4 You missed a lot.

asher_cross Yeah, get with the program Grim

Grimzo guess Sorry guys, I somehow fell asleep at the computer.... long day I guess.

    Proteus4 Well that is reassuring.

asher_cross Wow, are we really that boring?

Proteus4 *shrugs* I guess Grimzo is not a fan.

Grimzo Heh, no i had a long day, If you guys are reading my blog, you're probably aware of the funnies I have to deal with at work happy

Proteus4 Fair enough... get some sleep... and to all a goodnight... or day.... or whenever you read this.

Grimzo Thanks for all the fish, and so long!

    asher_cross so long, arrividerce!

Grimzo I'm sure that's not how you spell that... is it? Next week we discuss the sure to be heated topic of "Lucas and The Prequels!"

    Roswell (2.04) “Summer of ‘47” – Review

    By: jesuiscanadien

The ‘Alien Nation’ are in the chamber with the newly-found granilith. They are talking about the granilith, and they decide to meet back there after school to look in the issue further. At school, Michael is blowing the humans in the group off when he gets cornered by his History teacher. The teacher tells him that Michael’s failing the class and informs him that he’s to do a paper on one of the members of the 509th bomb group in town in order not to fail.

Later Michael is interviewing one of the survivors, Hal Carver, and instead of talking about WWII, like the history professor wanted; they get to talking about what happened in Roswell back in the summer of 1947. Seems Hal was involved in the crash, and he agrees to tell Michael what really happened. (The ‘Alien Our Gang’ play all the parts in the story.)

Hal and his pal, Richard Dodie, were called out to a crash site in the desert, but it was like no crash site they’d ever been to. The debris was unusual and when Hal picked up a piece, it crumpled and reformed in his hand. During their time on the site they ran into a fiery reporter, who was trying to get the scoop, saying it had been a flying saucer crash. She was forcibly removed by the deputy sheriff, Jim Valenti (Sr.).

Things get even odder after that, as Hal and Richard are driving the truck back to base with cargo from the crash site on board, Hal nearly runs over a glowing being and is run off the road. As Hal jumps out to investigate, Richard calls him back to the truck to have a look in the back. There are glowing pods sitting in crates as the two look on in wonder. This is enough to freak the two of them out, and they go drinking at the bar in town after they’ve dropped off the cargo. Hal is hit on by the reporter, Betty Osorio, and she tries to glean info from him about the crash. Hal isn’t biting, but after he gets back to the table, he’s dressed down by the Intel officer, Captain Cavitt. Cavitt warns him off the reporter and tells him to only say the crash was a weather balloon.

Later that evening, Hal is with his girlfriend, Rosemary, and they were getting ready to slide in bed for an evening’s entertainment. Hal realises that they’re being watched by some guy just outside the window, and he chases him off.

The next day, Hal is meeting Betty at the bar and he’s reticent to talk to her. Betty introduces Hal to a nurse on the base, Yvonne White. Seems Yvonne has seen things she just can’t reconcile and Betty wants to see if their stories mesh. Hal walks out in disgust. Hal then goes over to Rosemary’s place to vent, but Deputy Valenti is there with Rosemary. Incensed, Hal gets even angrier when he finds out that Rosemary’s place was tossed by the military police.

He confronts Colonel Carver, who tells him to get his game back on, because if he doesn’t start obeying orders, he’s going to lose his job as a flyer. He orders Hal to write up the letters of two privates who were killed that morning in a supposed jeep accident. Hal instead calls up Yvonne White and asks to speak to her in private. They meet in his car before she has to catch a flight transport to London, where she’s been dispatched. They talk about what she’s seen in an autopsy of the bodies from the crashed flight, and it’s nothing human or mammalian that Yvonne has ever seen, and she’s seen plenty. Yvonne leaves Hal and when Hal hears a feminine scream, he can’t find Yvonne anywhere.

This only leads Hal to further investigation, as he goes to Colonel Carver’s office to get info from Dixie, his secretary. She tries to warn him off the case and when she leaves Carver’s office, Hal takes a confidential file from Carver’s inbox and reads it. The info leads him to trying to gain access to the hangar where the debris is being kept, but he is turned away by his old friend Dodie, who is now a turncoat, abandoning their friendship for his own career. This leads Hal to meet up with Betty and he gives her the file. Betty wants to know if he’ll go on the record and Hal isn’t so sure of what he should do.

Later that day, Hal meets up with Richard at the bar and sees that Richard isn’t bearing the responsibility of knowledge too well, as he’s rip-roaringly drunk. Hal tells him not to worry as it will come out in the news the next day. After Hal leaves, Cavitt tells Dodie thanks for the good job and Dodie seems revolted by what he had to do, which was betray his best friend.

The next day, none of the newspapers have Betty’s story in them, and when Hal tries to call Betty at her paper, she’s not there. He goes into the office and sees a resignation for him sitting on his desk. Going into Carver’s office to confront the Colonel, he is instead confronted by his friend Richard and they have a fight. Hal ends up signing the resignation and storms out of the office, going to the bar to get ripped. The bartender gives him an envelope, and inside is a note from Betty and a key to a door on the base. Hal tries to call Betty at home, but finds out that she’s been killed in an auto accident the day before. This prompts him to investigate the door on the base.

He gains access and sees the pods, and while he’s snapping pictures, he is interrupted by two of the little aliens he saw the night he was run off the road. He tells them to save the pod-thingies and runs out of the room. When he sees some MPs and an officer heading for the door, he pulls the fire alarm to let the aliens take their pods and he makes a dash for it, to draw the MPs away from the room. He climbs over a fence and loses his camera in the process, but instead of trying to get it, he runs off into the darkness, with shots being fired after him.

Back to the present day, Michael is told by Hal that it was the only time he tried to stick his neck out for anything and it all went to pot, so Michael shows him his alien powers and tells Hal that he saved him that night. They hug and Michael seems to have found some closure.

Later that day, he runs into Liz at school and he apologises for being a jerk and tells Liz that they’ll work the congresswoman thing out. Liz likes his new attitude. After that, he brings Maria to the granilith chamber and tells her about it and what Hal told him. He also tells Maria that there were two sets of pods that the ‘Alien Nation’ came from, and there’s another set somewhere out there. We are left to ponder that tidbit as the episode closes.

The backstory was interesting for me in this episode. Normally, I hate to see flashbacks with the characters being played by the characters of the show, but this gave me valuable information that I will need for the season as it progresses. I liked seeing the post-war world and what the boys were like after their heroic actions were over. It made sense that men still serving out terms in the armed forces would feel disjointed and out of place in peacetime. They aren’t built for peace, they’re built for war.

The bits about how the aliens were trying to get the pods back was really interesting and it made me want to know what kind of mechanics they employed to move those burdensome pods to their new resting-places. Plus, how did they manage to get the granilith to its place in the rock formation? These may not be integral to the plot of the story, but it still bugs me and makes me want to know how they did that. I am naturally curious.

Now that we know there is another pod set out there, it will be nifty to figure out what happened to it and if anybody survived. Yes, I already know the answer, but humour me and let me pretend I don’t know. It’ll save the folks who haven’t seen the whole of Season Two from getting spoiled.

Overall, a good episode, even though I can’t normally stand flashbacks like that, and it provided good backstory to help fill in some of the gaps and open new ones up.

'Doctor Who' Movie On The Way?
digitalspy.co.uk is reporting that producers are planning to bring back Billie Piper for a Doctor Who movie, according to a report.

The decision was prompted by the realisation that the show's budget was constraining it in terms of sets and effects, according to the Daily Star.

A source told the paper that the proposed movie would also see assistant Rose Tyler, played by Piper, reunited with David Tennant.

    The Newest Charlie Kaufman Script!
aintitcoolnews.com now has up a reader opinion of someone who has read the new Charlie Kaufman script right now apparently titled "Schenectady, New York" - and it sounds awesome.

On a side note, if anyone finds a link to the script you can read for yourself, please, please, PLEASE, post a comment with a link. I want to read it badly!

'Dr. Who' Sarah Jane Gets Own Show
scifi.com is reporting that Doctor Who executive producer Russell T. Davies told SCI FI Wire that production is underway on the spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures, featuring Elisabeth Sladen in her role as the title investigative journalist, Sarah Jane Smith, who is known to Who fans as the companion to the third and fourth Doctors in the 1970s. "It's a one-off special, not a pilot," Davies said in an interview in London. "And that will be followed by a series that starts filming in April. Right now, we have to balance Doctor Who and [spinoff series] Torchwood, but the most important thing we always have to remember is that Doctor Who is the mother ship. Without that, we would't exist, so we plan everything very carefully."

Stargate Atlantis 3.10 “The Return, Part 1” Review

    asher_cross

The expedition is ousted from Atlantis by a ship full of Ancients who reclaim the city as their own. Resolving themselves to mediocre jobs on Earth, the team executes a daring plan against orders to retake the city from Ancient-Replicators. An exciting set up, the episode has enough charm to hold on its own, keeping us on our toes until March. Read on.

    Summary

Testing out the now-completed intergalactic bridge, Sheppard arrives at the SGC in a jumper, greeted by Generals Landry and O’Neill. On the way back, Sheppard meets the Daedalus at the half-way point station set up as a rest stop between trips. The Earth ship detects a ship moving at nearly the speed of light, and intercepts. They discover it’s an Ancient warship on a course for Atlantis, and hail them. Identifying them as friendly, the Daedalus escorts them back to Atlantis, where they immediately, to everyone’s surprise, make the decision to reclaim the city as their own. Since it is rightfully theirs, Earth agrees; however, the Ancients want the city to themselves for the time being, asking the expedition to leave. Under duress, Weir relents, and Gen. O’Neill and IOA representative Richard Woolsey are assigned as the liaison between the Ancients and Earth.

For the next few weeks, the crew settles into their own rhythm: Sheppard heads up an SG team, McKay works at Area 51, Ronon joins Teyla with her people at another planet the Ancients have relocated them to, Beckett works in the SGC’s medical team, and Weir sulks at home, not taking another job. After getting together for dinner one night several weeks later, they’re all called back to the SGC to receive some startling news: The Ancient-Replicators have returned, seizing the city after unexpectedly overriding the failsafes that keep them from harming Ancients. Receiving an interrupted transmission from O’Neill and Woolsey, the team requests permission to take back the city, but Landry prohibits them from doing so.

Not wanting to do nothing, McKay hatches a plan to get them to Pegasus and get a force together to retake Atlantis. Revising the macro used to work the intergalactic bridge, he tweaks it (while Weir distracts Dr. Lee in the lab by getting him talking about WoW) so that it will stop at the Athosian planet. With another well-placed distraction, Sheppard, Weir, McKay, and Beckett steal the jumper and head through the gate. Once at the planet, they get Teyla and Ronon to rejoin their ranks, and arm themselves with new, sleeker Anti-Replicator Guns (ARGs). Arming the jumper, McKay dials Atlantis and activates a backdoor program he designed to override the city’s gate shield. Preparing themselves for the fight of their lives, they fly through the gate…

What a cool, cool setup for an ep! I say that because as fun as this ep was to watch, it wasn’t the full story – we’ll get the hopefully-awesome payoff in about 6 months. (Seriously Sci-Fi Channel, don’t leave us hanging that long!) The biggest complaint I have about this episode, however, is the sketchy nature of the Ancient retaking of the city; it feels like it just kinda happens all of a sudden, with no warning or anything, and the team doesn’t even consider the fact that they could be Asurans (no checks or anything). Also, sometimes the pre-episode recap is useful to the story, but today it just telegraphed the appearance of Asurans, stuff that could have easily been weaved in with expository dialogue.

Enough about that; the best part of this episode was seeing everyone deal with taking sub-par paths in their life: the SGC, while similar to their old job, is just not the same for Sheppard and Beckett; Area 51 frankly doesn’t need McKay’s quick problem-solving skills as much as the expedition did; and Teyla and Ronon are little more than farmers on their planet. Weir takes the biggest hit; this expedition was her baby, and she cannot imagine going back to just another job.

O’Neill’s cameo was fun, but short, as was all of the SG-1 character’s appearances (the WoW scene with Lee was particularly chuckleworthy) – though I think it would have been fun to have Sheppard try to be part of SG-1 for that scene and simply not meshing with the team, mostly because they already have a wisecracking leading-man type.

The set up for the next episode was pitch-perfect; set up with weapons and an elaborate plan, our small but well-armed group of adventurers set off to take back the city occupied by a nigh-invincible army of Replicators, and just maybe save the life of the older show’s former star in the process. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.

    Memorable Quotes

Instead of a memorable quote, I just want to say my favorite moment in the ep was Ronon's impromptu (and probably unscripted) bearhug of Sheppard, with his out-of-breath "Oh my God" as a response. Classic.

'Heroes' Makes Strong Debut On NBC
digitalspy.co.uk is reporting that Heroes got off to a strong start on NBC on Monday night, according to overnight ratings data from Nielsen Media Research.

The show, billed as the next Lost and already picked up by Sci-Fi in the UK, averaged 14.3m viewers for the peacock network at 9pm. It came just ahead of a comedy block on CBS, which averaged 14.2m viewers. More importantly, Heroes topped CBS by over 30% in the critical advertiser-friendly 18-49 demographic.

    -------

    Rena Sofer Joins 'Heroes'
superherohype.com is reporting that Rena Sofer has landed recurring roles on Fox's Emmy-winning action drama "24" and on NBC's new sci-fi drama "Heroes." On "24," from 20th Century Fox TV and studio-based Imagine TV, Sofer will play Graham's (Paul McCrane) wife. On "Heroes," from NBC Universal TV Studio, Sofer will play the wife of aspiring politician Nathan Petrelli (Adrian Pasdar).

    -------

Shakespeare To Appear On 'Doctor Who'
scifi.com is reporting that Russell T. Davies, executive producer of the BBC's hit SF drama Doctor Who, told SCI FI Wire that the show's upcoming third season will again introduce a famous character from British history, in this case, the author of Hamlet and King Lear.

"William Shakespeare [played by Dean Lennox Kelly] is going to be in one of the episodes," Davies revealed in an interview in London. "And I think it's going to be one of those lavish, gorgeous episodes. We're really traveling around the country to get the right locations, because Elizabethan streets are not easy to come by, so the whole crew is going on the road. We're spending three nights in the Globe Theatre, which is the replica of Shakespeare's Globe, so it's a really big shoot. I'm very excited about that one and the script by Gareth Roberts, which is just gorgeous, so that's going to be very exciting."

    Anime Review: Cowboy Bebop 25 & 26

    asher_cross

In the two-parter finale “The Real Folk Blues,” Spike goes after Vicious for the last time to save his old flame Julia, sealing the fates of our characters. Read on.

    Summary

At the headquarters of the Red Dragon Syndicate, Vicious and several of his men attempt a covert assassination of the three elders in charge of the syndicate, but is caught in the act by said elders. He is cuffed and taken away, but with a promise to take his revenge. Meanwhile, Spike and Jet are chilling at a bar, when the place is lit up with gunfire, taking cover, the two begin to fight back, until one of them runs over and joins their side; Shin, an old friend of Spike’s. He tells him that Vicious is due to be executed for his actions, and bounties have now been taken out on both Spike and his old flame, Julia. Shin covering their escape, they hide out with an old contact, a doctor that fixes up a leg wound Jet took in the melee.

Spike thinks back to a memory of his past - his telling Julia that he’s leaving the syndicate, and his offer to take her with him, which is foiled by Vicious’ later threat that she must kill him, or die. At a spaceport, Faye waits to go to her next destination after finding out that her childhood home has been torn down, seeing the actor who played Punch on Big Shot taking his mother back home. Spike contacts her in her fighter and tells her to come back, which she refuses. Standing outside, she sees a blonde woman in a red car being chased by a pair of syndicate men in a car. Faye shoots out their tire, and the blonde picks her up, managing to elude them shortly after. Stopping to talk, they agree to partner up, and the blonde mentions that she is looking for a specific bounty hunter, Spike, telling Faye to tell him to meet her “there.” Jet encourages Spike to turn back, but he cares too much for Julia. Faye returns, telling Spike the news.

The Bebop is hit by Syndicate fighters, and Spike takes off to fight them, while on the planet, Vicious’ execution takes a turn when he unleashes a secret weapon (his crow explodes, sending shrapnel everywhere) allowing him to break out, killing the elders and all the others in the room. Once the Bebop is safe from fighters, Jet lets Spike go after Vicious to save Julia. Meeting her in the graveyard where they’d planned to meet after his defection from the syndicate, Julia gravely points a gun at him. End Part 1.

As Part 2 begins, Julia puts down her gun, agreeing to go with him and escape the life. Meanwhile, Shin arrives at the bloody scene of Vicious’ coup, reporting that Spike and Julia got away. Driving to Annie’s place (Annie being the girl Spike met up with in “Ballad of Fallen Angels”), Spike finds her mortally wounded, as she didn’t tell the Syndicate where she was. She dies just as more syndicate men show up, Spike fending them off as the two head for the fire escape. Unfortunately, before they can fully escape, Julia is shot and killed. Returning to Bebop, Spike gears up and has one final meal with Jet, telling Faye that one of his eyes is artificial (which explains what we saw in the flashback that began “Sympathy for the Devil”), and that he sees the past in one eye and the future in another. He takes off, leaving the crew to confront Vicious, who is waiting for him in the heavily fortified Syndicate headquarters. Fighting his way past the lobby and the reception hall, he gets to the elevator and climbs to the top floor, Shin joining him along the way and sacrificing himself to get Spike to Vicious. The two fight a brutal battle, Spike with his pistol and Vicious with his sword, Spike eventually managing to kill his nemesis, but being badly wounded in the process. As he stumbles down the steps to see the remaining syndicate men waiting for him, he collapses on the floor, ceasing to move.

    Comments

What a way to end the series – this two-parter wraps up the main storyline, that of Spike’s and Vicious’ rivalry, and the former’s search for Julia in a way that doesn’t feel rushed or cheap. Spike’s mission is that of vengeance, especially after Julia, the love of his life that he’s been searching for for years, is killed by Vicious’ men. The music and direction are top-notch here, the gunfights being kinetic, and the song “Blue” accompanying the shows’ ending title crawl and final shot (a widening crane shot of Spike’s slumped body on the stairs, panning up to the stars, one of which goes out, signaling Spike’s death and echoing something the shaman says to Jet in a scene in the final ep) being a particularly powerful sendoff for the amazing series.

It’s probably a good thing that they sent off Ed and Ein in the previous episode, as their comic presence would not have worked anywhere in this tightly knit and dark finale, so as much as I love the characters, I did not miss them; they would simply have been too far out of place. The only small complaints I have revolve around the character of Shin, who is the little brother of an old friend in the Syndicate who decides to help. At first, you think about this new character we haven’t seen before, who is only here to provide an extra gun hand for these two eps, and you think that he’s going to betray Spike. Nope, his intentions are honorable, which is good, but you’d think they’d give us a bit more history for a new character who is going to be so helpful.

Nonetheless, I can’t see the story ending any other way. The artful manner of this show, indicative of all Japanese anime, makes an intense pair of episodes that any anime series would be proud to have end their show.

    Billie Piper Considered Suicide
digitalspy.co.uk is reporting that Billie Piper has admitted she contemplated suicide earlier in her career, amidst a long term battle against anorexia.
In her new autobiography Growing Pains, she reveals a phonecall to her parents from a Chicago hotel room in 1999 made her reconsider plans to take a drug overdose. The former Doctor Who star also admits to a two year fight against anorexia at the height of her pop career in her late teens. The eating disorder briefly resurfaced after her marriage to Chris Evans ended two years ago.

    'Time Cop' Back On Duty?
moviehole.net is reporting that Dark Horses’ Mike Richardson – currently working on “Hellboy 2” – gave IESB an update on what else the company is currently developing film-wise, and mentioned a possible restart for the “Time Cop” film series.

Richardson says he’s in talks with Universal about possibly relaunching the film series – without Van Damme, we assume.

The comics tell of a Time Enforcement Agent, part of a specialized police organization, who is sent back and forwards in the future to prevent crimes from happening – as well as to capture crooked ‘time jumpers’.

    'Lost' Is A Moving Target
scifi.com is reporting that Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, co-executive producers of ABC's hit SF series Lost, told SCI FI Wire that they can't reveal secrets about the upcoming third season, but allowed that things will head in a different direction. If last year was the Year of the Hatch, "you might think of season three as the mystery of who the Others are," Horowitz said in an interview.
