xx Star Control Could Get a Sequel... tell Toys for Bob how bad you want it!
April 16, 2006, 06:09:02 PM by Chad

Toys for Bob's website has an update from Alex (Producer).   Oh My Mandibles Clack Against One Another And Snicker With Such Amusement... They are interested in making a Star Control sequel and need to convince Activision that this would be the most brilliant idea ever.  It of course is, so Alex is asking for you to e-mail him and let him know!

E-mail Alex

The Ur-Quan Masters Project also has a fancy dancy petition page that sends an e-mail to Alex so that you never have to leave the safety of your browser.  But if you ever do leave, don't forget your basket of perfect mauve stones, just the right size for throwing at monsters!

I don't get out as much as I used too but, I've noticed this picked up on Slashdot as " Hope for Another Star Control Sequel?" and in GameSpot's Rumor Control as "Star Control sequel in the works?"

Relevant excerpt from their site's news...

"So it's taken me my usual 3 paragraphs to get to the real meat of this news article. And here it comes: A Star Control Sequel. We (I) want us to do a Star Control sequel. Back in the early 90s, Paul and Fred and some other people made Star Control 2.  Personally, I thought it was pretty amazing. It was like a drug to me. Not quite as much like a drug as the drugs were but very, very close. I know there are other people that loved this game too. Sometimes you email me and ask if we'll ever do a sequel. And I always tell you that I wish we could do a sequel but it's very hard to convince large publishing companies that a new Star Control would sell very well in the current video game market. But maybe, just maybe, if enough of you people out there send me emails requesting that Toys For Bob do a legitimate sequel to Star Control 2, I'll be able to show them to Activision, along with a loaded handgun, and they will finally be convinced to roll the dice on this thing.

Will you do that for me? Your old pal, Alex? If you were working at a video game development company who had 2 founders that had worked on a classic, epic space role-playing and combat game years ago for which you had recently re-acquired rights to and were hoping to convince your new parent company to let you make a sequel by asking for the public to send in requests for said sequel, I'd email you. There's actually even a petition online. I have no idea how to sign it but here it is:  http://starcontrol.classicgaming.gamespy.com/petition/petition_signed.shtml

xx I WILL INITIATE SYSTEMS CHECK LEVEL FOUR.
March 12, 2006, 07:44:57 PM by Chad

Its been less than a year since I last posted anything new here.  It feels like more than 2.

I feel like I'm always busy, others might think I am not.  It's all relative.

Whats the deal with me?  I'm sure you don't really want to know that so, what about this site instead?  GameSpy (or IGN) decided to "upgrade" their hosted system in Nov/Dec.  Yeah... in the middle of holidays!  Undecided  Kinda bad timing for me (and you since you are reading this). This required a site migration.  I ignored it all because I was busy and then they "auto-migrated" the site.

I remember checking on this whole mess some time during the beginning of the new year.  It didn't look pretty.  Motivation waning.  Knew it would take a lot of work.

Its now a few months later, still very busy, mostly with work this time.  Motivation waxing though.  Give Scott credit, the only reason I'm here as early as I am this year is because of his message.  What up Scott?!

I'm not exactly sure what they did to the site but, its a mess.  I'm not talking about like when you drop a pile of papers on the ground.  More like monkeys flinging poo kind of mess.  Ad code is a different size also.  CGI is out, PHP is in.  So all the cgi and perl scripts are done broke.  I fixed the main page so the news will display and I upgraded the forums to the latest version.  Thats all I have time for now.  My back hurts.  Might be all I have time for a few more days.

I'm not in a good mood about it.  So, if you feel mad at me, gamespy, ign, accolade, I ask you to read this twice...

Are you in a good mood today?
Please allow me to give you some advice.
Rather than become tense, and fire weapons at other people's ships
simply say, `Whoopdy Dee and Trolly Bazoo!'
You will feel much better and you will be much more popular.

June 11, 2005, 06:37:54 PM by Chad

And for some of the best news in months, the next version of UQM has been released!  Below is a blatant rip of the announcement news post from their official site.  I encourage you to go over there now!

Quote

Hello Hunams,

It's been a while, but here it is: The Ur-Quan Masters version 0.4.0. With all the features from the original Star Control II present, and as stable as a horse barn, there's nothing that should stop you from sharing it with all your friends.

Some mentionable improvements:

  • PC intro and ending sequences are now present
  • a new `triscan' scaler
  • lots of fixes to the subtitles
  • an in-game setup menu
  • using graphics from the PC version of Star Control II in some places where they are better than the 3DO ones
  • PC style 3-step zooming in melee (at your choice)
  • lots of internal restructuring
  • many bug fixes

For a complete list, we direct you to the What's New page

When you're ready to start downloading, the place to go is the download page

Enjoy.

xx Toys for Bob's Game: Madagascar
June 11, 2005, 06:23:48 PM by Chad

On May 25, 2005... Game adaptation of animated film enters retail outlets today; available for Xbox, PS2, GameCube, PC, and both Nintendo portables. at Gamespot.com

I noticed just yesterday (June 10, 2005), that Gamespot put up some Gameplay footage movies!

Toys for Bob updated their site on Mar 09 2005 about their work on Madagascar...  Grin

Quote
...

We were just about to submit Madagascar.  Wait, let me go back even further.  No, actually I don't need to go back any further.  That's really as far as I remember.  Let's talk about Madagascar.  Madagascar is the video game title we've been working on for the past 20 months.  Some might even call it a "AAA title".  "Title" meaning video game and honestly, I don't know what "AAA" (pronounced Triple-A) means.  What I do know is that there are no video games that are not AAA titles.  No company has ever made a AA or D title.  You're probably thinking something like, "What about XXX titles?" and let me just say this, I'm right there with you.  I have noticed that people who talk about AAA titles are usually the same kind of people who participate in Fun Runs.  The also sometimes say, "See you at GDC!".  For those of you that don't work in the video game industry, that means absolutely nothing.  True for people who do work in the video game industry as well.  It's pretty much the equivalent of mumbling under your breath when you're really intoxicated.

In the last news broadcast, I told you that Activision's website would probably have info about our game Madagascar by the end of January or beginning of February.  That turned out to be completely false.  There were about 1907 other lies in that last news broadcast though so you probably didn't notice this particular one.  Now they tell me that the game will have it's own website soon, closer to the movie release date.  They also tell me to "be patient" and "please exhale into this breathalyzer".  I don't care if they are cops, I get really tired of hearing people say things like that.

...

Months later...

Hopefully TFB will have success with Madagascar the Game as the movie was #1 in the U.S. box offices during the weekend of 6/3-6/5 2005...  Toon Tale 'Madagascar' Tops Box Office at movies.yahoo.com

xx Discussion Board and News Back
January 30, 2005, 05:38:23 PM by Chad

Hello everyone.  It has been awhile!

New news and forums are up and running now after at least 2 months...

The forum url is now:

http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~starcontrol/forum/

SMF is the board type.  SMF is the next spawn by the same people who did YaBB SE, which is the PHP/MySQL version of our old board type, YaBB.  Or something like that.  Does anyone really care to know more than that?

It took so long to fix the two most important features of this site because 1) it was the holidays, 2) I had (and still do) a ton of other stuff to do, 3) no easy way to convert messages from YaBB to SMF.

The other day, I ended up surfing to SMF's website and I noticed a new YaBB to SMF converter!   So we hopefully have not lost any messages in the transfer.  Also, your old logins and passwords *should* still work.

I'll work on adding the old board "theme" and additional themes (the colors of the board and images) as I have time.  I thought it was more important to get this thing just back up and running.  There are a ton of new features and cool things with SMF.  There are also tons of more features that I haven't even turned on yet.  If things go well, maybe I'll turn them on.

But, anyways, lets see who is still around?...

P.S.  I want to thank everyone who e-mailed me with suggestions and encouragement.  Wink
