So Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas makes it's way onto the pirated highly anticipated console games list with just a week prior to its commercial release giving Halo 2 a little company. Personally, I have no idea why you would pirate a console game in the first place. I guess paying that three bucks at Blockbuster to rent it is just too damned much for some people! Today's question is:

Do you think piracy has a big impact on the sales of console games or have titles like Halo 2 (and now GTA: SA) just blown things out of proportion?

Imperator Preview 09:25 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - games: mmog (0 comments)
GameSpy previewed Imperator, Mythic's upcoming massively multiplayer role playing game:

Romans in space? Not only them, but also Mayans, Native Americans, basically all the inhabitants of Asia, Africa, Eastern and Northern Europe, and the Middle East? Yes indeed. And any regions of the world that I've missed are probably due to the fact that Mythic isn't ready to reveal their peoples' involvement in Imperator altogether intriguing take on the alternate Earth genre. The origin of this flight of fancy is the twisting of one key historical occurrence: the death of ancient Roman figure Germanicus, arguably at the hands of the Tiberius, the emperor himself, and his adoptive father. The speculation goes like this: Tiberius, jealous of Germanicus' rising popularity with the populace and the military, had him offed.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Leaked? 05:30 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - consoles: ps2 (17 comments)
GameSpy is reporting that Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has been leaked a week before its release making the rounds on the pirate scene:

With less than a week to go, the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas impact might not be as big as last week's Halo 2 predicament, but even so, several of the big titles this year have been pirated prior to appearing in stores. The GTA: San Andreas version is 2.6gig big and labelled DVD USA, so no French Carl Johnson speech this time around.

MoH: Pacific Assault Preview 05:15 pm - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - games: action (1 comment)
Gamespot greased out an updated preview of Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault, developed in-house at EA succeeding 2015's Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Here's a bit about the new graphics engine it uses:

EA decided to start fresh with Pacific Assault, so instead of using the Quake III engine that powered Allied Assault and many other first-person shooters, the company wrote a brand-new graphics engine built to take advantage of the latest hardware advances. As a result, Pacific Assault ups the visual ante considerably. For example, the Japanese air attack on Pearl Harbor is a visually dazzling sequence, with the air full of Japanese planes, flak bursts and bomb explosions everywhere, battleships burning in the distance, and sailors and Marines on the ground trying to fight back. But it's the subtle little details that will catch your eye, like the way your vision blurs when you're firing the heavy 50-caliber machine gun, or the way a concussion or blast will turn the world a blurry black and white.

Super Monkey Ball Deluxe Announced 08:01 am - Andrew Burnes - consoles: general news (11 comments)
SEGA today announced that monkey balls will be heading to the Playstation 2 and Xbox in Spring 2005 thanks to Super Monkey Ball Deluxe:

The new title will feature 300 stages (114 from Super Monkey Ball, 140 from Super Monkey Ball 2, and 46 Deluxe-exclusive boards), and will be available in spring 2005.

In addition to new stages, Super Monkey Ball Deluxe will offer a new Challenge mode, integrating varying skill settings (Beginner, Advanced, and Expert) into one fluid ramp up, rather than breaking them out as independent gameplay sections. There will also be additional stages in the story mode. All twelve of the party games from Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2 are also to be included along with 6 new games, which is effectively two-and-a-half retails games on one disc!

Further Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks Details 07:59 am - Andrew Burnes - consoles: general news (0 comments)

The game will include various characters and locations (Dead Pool and Living Forest) from previous Mortal Kombat games and... puzzles. Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is developed by Paradox Development and is set for release in September 2005 for the PS2 and Xbox.

THQ Comments on WWE Fraud 07:55 am - Andrew Burnes - games: general news (1 comment)
THQ has commented on the WWE licensing fraud that was revealed yesterday:

THQ is committed to preserving its rights under the videogame license with the WWE. THQ believes the WWE is pleased with the manner in which THQ has managed their brand in the video game category. As THQ is not directly accused of any wrongdoing in the complaint -- rather the complaint alleges wrongdoing on the part of JAKKS Pacific and others of which THQ was and is unaware -- THQ is not in a position to comment on these allegations. In any event, either there is no basis for terminating the video game license, or THQ expects to be made whole by those whose conduct is eventually found to be unlawful. THQ intends to vigorously protect and pursue its rights, if necessary.

The lawsuit has no effect on games currently scheduled for release, including WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw, which is scheduled to ship on November 2.

At least they can still publish the latest title...

Medal of Honor: Dogs of War Announced 07:40 am - Andrew Burnes - consoles: general news (2 comments)
The new Medal of Honor console title mentioned earlier, has now been officially announced by EA:

Electronic Arts is proud to announce Medal of Honor: Dogs of War. Slated for release in the Spring of 2005, Dogs of War is the latest game from EA's acclaimed Medal of Honor franchise which has been credited with pioneering the First Person Shooter WWII genre when it debuted in 1999. Building on the hallmarks of the franchise, Dogs of War, advances on the series by introducing players to a new way of playing, while still delivering a unflinching picture of warfare and its gut-wrenching brutality. Developed by EA Los Angeles (EALA), the new title will be released under the EA GAMES brand for the Sony PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system, the Nintendo GameCube and the Xbox video game system from Microsoft.

Europe 1942. These are desperate hours for the Allied forces as the Nazi war machine rages across a devastated European landscape. With the British on the brink, Lt. William Holt of the OSS is sent on a secret mission by order of the President of the United States. On his own, or with his squad, Holt is pivotal in helping to turn the tide in four of the most crucial battles leading to victory in Europe.

The press release header mentions Julius Caesar Act III, Scene I: William Shakespeare; if the game were actually set in Rome during the time of Caesar, I may be somewhat more interested.

Computer & Video Games snatched some time with Blue 52's thieving action title:

Blue52 says that its game has been inspired by "Entrapment [a film starring Catherine Zeta Jones' arse and some laser beams] and The Thomas Crown Affair, those big Hollywood heist movies really", revealing that there's also a "very specific nod to Mission Impossible, descending on a wire amongst laser beams". In keeping with this theme, lead character Anya has a sidekick, Louie Palmer, business associate, fence and mentor who provides all her gadgets and electronic equipment and provides the voice in her ear as you play through the game.

Hidden & Dangerous 2: Sabre Squadron Ships 07:32 am - Andrew Burnes - games: action (2 comments)
Global Star Software, another one of Take Two's labels, has announced that the Hidden & Dangerous 2 expansion pack, Sabre Squadron, has now shipped to stores across North America:

Sabre Squadron adds nine new single player missions, an eagerly anticipated co-operative mode, brand new multiplayer missions, new weapons, enhanced AI and more.

Released in October 2003, Hidden & Dangerous 2 puts gamers in command of a squad of elite British Special Air Service (SAS) commandos as they tackle the most dangerous covert missions of the Second World War. The Hidden & Dangerous franchise has sold over 1 million units worldwide to date.

Hidden & Dangerous 2: Sabre Squadron for PC is rated M for mature and is available now for a suggested retail price of $9.99.

The budget price makes this well worth buying, especially with the co-op mode.

Innerloop Takes On The Vikings 07:15 am - Andrew Burnes - games: real-time strategy (1 comment)
Many many thanks to reader John F. Kristiansen who sends in word that the next title from the Joint Strike Fighter & Project IGI developer Innerloop, has been exclusively unveiled in Norweigan paper, Dagbladet. Here's the summary of the game from John:

Norwegian developers 'Innerloop' ('Joint Strike Fighter', 'Project IGI', 'Project IGI 2') has in secret been developing a strategy game based on the history of the Vikings. Without delving into the more grotesque details of Vikings, the game is set out to be a realistic depiction of the way of the Scandinavian people in the years between 800 and 1050 AD (known as the era of vikings). The game is called 'Vikingjarl' in Norwegian and is slated for a 2006 release ("jarl" is a Scandinavian chieftain or nobleman).

If you can read Norweigan, or want to peruse the concept art, head to Dagbladet Online. John likened the full description of the game to that of the long-running Settlers series.

Update: John has sent over more information regarding Vikingjarl, thanks to Gamer.no who had a brief chat with the developers:

You will take the role as one of seven different "jarls", with the goal of making you and your "aett" (loosely translates as an advanced tribe) the ruler of the north. Innerloop would describe the game as a mixture of the campaign-part of the 'Total War' series and the classic 'Defender of the Crown' from Cinemaware. It's turn based and is seen from an isometric perspective. You won't be able to directly manipulate battles, but rather set general strategies (aggressiveness and such). To further solidify the realistic approach, Innerloop has put a lot of weight on trade (the devs compare the trade part to that of 'Elite').

If everything goes as planned, the game will be released January 1st 2006, and the first screenshots of the game are expected to be released this coming Spring.

Once again, many thanks to John.

Might and Magic Q&A; 06:06 am - Jeff Tom - games: real-time strategy (0 comments)
StrategyPlanet have cooked up an interview with Tim Lang, lead developer on Might and Magic IX, going over the series:

CH: Might and Magic IX is considered a disappointment by more than one fan. How do you explain that the last few games of the series never quite managed to match the fun factor and polish of The Mandate of Heaven?

Tim: I think there's two reasons why Might and Magic took such a drastic downturn. First and foremost 3DO seemed intent on driving every single intellectual property they owned into the ground. We got shorter and shorter schedules, and less and less financial support from them. In MM9's case, a lot of the people we were depending on to finish the game were tied up with finishing Legends. Since that thing just stayed around and lingered in the depths of not-being-doneness it really pushed MM9 onto a tighter schedule. Secondly, I'm pretty sure JVC was burned out, disillusioned and just plain didn't like coming to work anymore.

Moment of Silence Preview 06:02 am - Jeff Tom - games: adventure (0 comments)
AdventureGamers have scooped a preview of Moment of Silence, an adventure game from German developer House of Tales. Here's a whiff:

Ever since we first learned about The Moment of Silence, it has held a special place in my heart. German developer House of Tales has emphasized—both in their studio's choice of names and in their repeated philosophy in interviews—their desire to create an effective narrative and build their games on character development and interaction. After spending some time with a preview build of Moment of Silence, I feel very confident that this may be one of the great point & click adventures of the modern era. All the signs are here: an engaging and intriguing story, likable characters, a realistic and human player character, and a simple interface that doesn't get in the way of the game.

Sith Lords Preview 05:57 am - Jeff Tom - games: action (0 comments)
ActionTrip have slapped up a preview of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - Sith Lords:

One of the first noticeable changes from the original is the addition of brand spanking new Force Powers, such as Force Sight and Force Crush. Force Sight was one of the new powers that were demonstrated at the presentation at E3. LucasArts producer Mike Gallo described what this ability does for us "Well, it lets you see through doors and read the force aura of characters in the world." God show Mike, but we also noticed one other distinct advantage to the ability, it tells you the alignment of other characters. (Ed. - This bounty hunter guy who is chasing and shooting at me is definitely evil. The Force tells me so.) As for Force Crush, it allows the user to lift their opponent in the air and hold them there, eventually crushing them in a very impressive, Darth Vadar-like way. Among other Jedi powers are also Scream which is a nice supersonic shockwave, and Fury, which basically is just that, you get to go all postal in order to cause more damage.

A Look At Urban Resolve 03:42 am - Andrew Burnes - games: simulation (2 comments)
Tenuously linked to gaming is an article on Wired today that looks at Urban Resolve, another game to help the U.S. military on its merry way:

Developed by the U.S. Joint Forces Command, or JFCom, a division of the Department of Defense, the $195,000 program is a combat simulation on a massive scale. It pits two opposing teams of soldiers against one another in a fight for control over a city under siege, and it's capable of modeling the behavior of the nearly 1 million entities -- the soldiers, civilians, cars, tanks and so on -- that might exist in such a conflict.

In other words, it's one part Risk, one part The Sims and one part raw supercomputing power. It's also the tool that could one day give the U.S. military the upper hand in urban conflicts akin to the ones currently taking place in Iraq.

Crusader Kings Q&A; 03:36 am - Andrew Burnes - games: real-time strategy (0 comments)
Also on FileFront is an interview with Fredrik Lindgren, who talks about Crusader Kings, a medieval real-time strategy title:

Q: Could you give us a brief overview of this up-and-coming strategy game?

A: Crusader Kings is a new type of strategy game, focusing just as much on intrigues, diplomacy and dynasty building as the actual battles as opposed to most traditional RTS and Wargames. In Crusader Kings, you assume the role of a medieval Christian lord and build your dynasty through marriage, warfare, alliances and intrigue. You can choose to play one of thousands of characters, each with individual traits and characteristics. This way Crusader Kings adds features of RPG into the strategy gaming.

Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed Taking Off October 27th 03:30 am - Andrew Burnes - games: mmog (2 comments)
On the official site, Sony Online Entertainment has announced that Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed will be leaving beta, and head to the commercial market on October 27th:

Haden Blackman, producer, LucasArts: "LucasArts is thrilled with the Jump To Lightspeed expansion, a product of our strong and ongoing partnership with SOE. This first expansion delivers the fun and engaging space combat experience players expect from Star Wars."

Jump to Lightspeed adds a whole new level of fast-paced game play to the established Star Wars Galaxies ground-based MMORPG. Thousands of players will now be able to join their friends in exploring and battling across 10 deep space sectors in over 20 different customizable spacecraft, including iconic X-wings, TIE fighters and "Millennium Falcon" type transports.

There's also a new developer diary available to read.

Axis & Allies Q&A; 03:26 am - Andrew Burnes - games: real-time strategy (0 comments)
Over on FileFront they chat to Brian Wood, lead designer of Axis & Allies, Atari's World War II real-time strategy title that shares little with the classic board game of the same name:

Q: What is your favorite feature in Axis and Allies at the moment?

A: I love the Special Operations. Special operations are abilities that the player can purchase with experience gained as your regiments fight. The Special Operations available are determined by your chosen general. Each nation has a choice of four generals, and each general has a variety of Special Ops at his disposal. Therefore, depending on the General, I will completely change my strategy for that nation. For example, the German general Rommel can use the Blitzkrieg ability on his tanks, buffing them with a multitude of combat bonuses or play as Nimitz, and players can save up their points to punish foes with an Atomic Bomb drop. It really gives each nation a different flavor and host of tactical options above and beyond tanks and infantry.

Medal of Honor Pacific Assault Delayed? 03:20 am - Andrew Burnes - games: action (0 comments)
Eurogamer today states that EA will push back the release of their next PC Medal of Honor game to the first quarter of 2005, although no specific reason is cited:

The much-delayed first-person shooter, the latest in a long line of World War II based titles from the publisher, has been repositioned for reasons unknown, but we'd be surprised if the impending release of Halo 2 and Half-Life 2 - both due out in mid-November - wasn't some kind of an influence on the decision. EA isn't known for backing down from a challenge, but those are two games that deserve respect - something even the megabucks publisher would probably concede.

Elsewhere they mention that a fourth console title is in the works.

Update: EA has stated that there is no delay.

EverQuest II Preview 03:06 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - games: mmog (1 comment)
WorthPlaying shared its impressions of the EverQuest II closed beta:

There's been much ado about EQ2's graphics. I'm going to understate them and say they do the job. They are amongst the best out there for MMOGs, and while I'm going to say appropriately glowing things about them, I am going to state I feel graphics are second fiddle to the gameplay; if the gameplay isn't happening, the graphics don't matter. I've been in both of the starting cities, and the art direction for both is fantastic. The good city is bright and cheery, and Freeport looks appropriately slummy. At the risk of being too graphic, the immersion in Freeport is so good, you could almost swear you smelled urine in the alleyways. Either that, or I forgot it was my turn to clean the litter boxes again. The character models are well done, by and large, but there's a few that still seem a tad plastic. The Dark Elf I'm least thrilled with, but the Human and Barbarian are well done. The model geometry is fine, but where I find fault is with the skin tones - they lack proper shading, making them look like Stretch Armstrongs.

Heroes Of Annihilated Empires Q&A; 12:55 am - Robert 'Apache' Howarth - games: real-time strategy (1 comment)
Amongst the many titles under developement at GSC Gameworld is Heroes Of Annihilated Empires, a fantasy themed real-time-strategy game using the Cossacks 2 engine. HomeLan chats with Oleg Yavorsky to learn more about it:

HomeLAN - What can you tell us about the graphics engine that is being used in the game?

Oleg Yavorsky - The engine we use is a highly upgraded one of Cossacks 2. The engine integrates 3D possibilities, vertex and pixel shaders, provides for smooth zoom-in, map rotation and other new eye-candy, while at the same time to our commonly high unit limit. By mixing big numbers of detailed sprite units with big 3D landscape, units and buildings, we will show the real scale of epic battles in the best traditions of classic fantasy. The right combination of 2D and 3D is the key technical achievement with the game and helps to ensure the proper visual and aesthetic feeling of the player.

So yesterday I was installing games on the new PC and got around to Call of Duty. It's like one minute I was setting my options and seeing how it ran, the next I was in the Russian campaign. Damn you Infinity Ward! Granted, it isn't the longest single player game ever, but time really flies when you're having fun. Today's question is: What are some of your favorite time wasters when it comes to games?

I'm feeling a bit of a cold this morning, so lets get rolling...
