Tribes: Vengeance Almost Gold 03:19 pm - Apache - games: action (1 comment)
Irrational Games announced that its Unreal engined sequel of sorts Tribes: Vengeance is moving towards gold master status (thanks Blues News). They also mention that work progresses well on Freedom Force Vs. The Third Reich and SWAT. Here's more on Vengeance:
We are now putting the finishing touches on Tribes:Vengeance. Most of the artists have finished and the features are all in place. The programmers are working their butts off to fix bugs and the designers are ensuring that they wring every last gram of fun (hey, we are on the metric system out in Australia) out of the levels. For Tribes producers Sara Verrilli and Tony Oakden, life consists primarily of monitoring the bug database and making sure everything stays on track. We are finishing up focus testing and by the end of the weekend we should have implemented all design changes.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Preview 03:15 pm - Apache - games: action (0 comments)
1Up recently shot out a preview of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, GSC Gameworld's forthcoming next-gen engined sci-fi shooter:

So what makes S.T.A.L.K.E.R. stand out from the postapocalyptic-shooter pack? Simply, the massive amount of space the game intends to give gamers. And not just space in terms of real estate to roam (though with 30 square kilometers to cover, there's plenty of that), but space in terms of how you choose to play the game and how you interact with the world. This is a game with eight entirely different potential endings, each achievable through entirely different potential styles of play.
For more S.T.A.L.K.E.R. news, check out Oblivion Lost who has links to some German fansite coverage of the Leipzig Games Convention.

Jason Hall Interview 06:15 pm - Apache - games: mmog (7 comments)
GameSpy slapped up a six page interview with former Monoloth strong man and now Warner Brothers VP Jason Hall about The Matrix Online and more. Here's some poop:
GameSpy: You had previously indicated that outside developers who license titles from Warner Brothers but create subpar products would suffer royalty penalties, thus forcing them to do their utmost best to have a quality game out. Since you made the statement, I've read that Atari wasn't really happy with that, since Enter the Matrix sold millions of copies, but the scores weren't all that hot. Apart from this example, have you received any further feedback regarding your statement?

Jason Hall:In general, a lot of the concern that people have had regarding the policy was rooted in the fact that they didn't understand how such a policy would be implemented, how penalties would be ultimately determined, or how we would arrive at the decision to actually exercise the penalty. Since that time, I've had plenty of opportunity to talk with publishers and developers about the whole issue, and we have been able to come to a much better understanding about what we're trying to accomplish.

I'm not kidding when I say that, going forward, all of the deals that we're doing have this provision in it. From the outside, the policy seems rather harsh. I would say the best comparison would be if I made the statement, "If you break the law in the United States, you are going to get the death penalty," but you also intrinsically understand that it's not quite as alarmist as it sounds.

There is a huge process between breaking the law and actually getting in the electric chair, and there a number of factors to be taken into account, like the severity of the broken law. The problem is that in the policy, "If the score is below a 7.0, you're paying penalties," people also race to the conclusion that basically assumes the worst. That's what created a lot of the controversy, but after we have had the opportunity to explain it, we are able to do the deal, and the provision is in, and no one feels like they were forced to do anything.

Sid Meier's Pirates! Impressions 06:09 pm - Apache - games: action / strategy (0 comments)
Those land lubbin bastards at Gamespot updated on a Saturday with a Sid Meier's Pirates! preview from GenCon:

Starting a new game runs though through a brief set of introduction screens that explain how you were once just another deckhand before you instigated a mutiny and took over your ship. You'll then have a small cache of gold and a substandard ship with middling cargo tonnage at your disposal. Your first order of business, unless you're feeling bold enough to try to attack an enemy ship with your limited resources, is to land at a nearby port, at which you can ingratiate yourself to the local governor. You can also visit the tavern to get tips on possible missions or easy marks (like merchant ships carrying large caches of gold) from the tavern owner or the barmaid. You'll also be able to visit with a mysterious stranger who sits in a corner and either gives out missions or will sell you pricey items or trinkets, like a bauble to impress the governor's daughter. You may also be able to recruit extra sailors at a tavern, or, if you're extremely popular with the nation that controls that colony, you may also receive an offer to get more hands on deck automatically before you leave port.

Rome Total War Impressions 05:55 pm - Apache - games: real-time strategy (0 comments)
PC.IGN previewed for demo for Creative Assembly's Rome: Total War which will be released on Monday. Here's a taste:

As Hannibal, you'll have some great firepower on your side. Two groups of cavalry are set hiding to the flanks of the advancing Roman army while spearmen, skirmishers, and mercenaries wait on the hill backed up by one group of archers, another contingent of heavy cavalry, and two groups of elephants. The spearmen have a special stance, which they will already be in when the battle begins, that needs to be the center of any defense. The long spears will keep the legions away from your flanks while drawing the enemy up the hill in order to make them more tired. Meanwhile, you'll have to time charges from the cavalry on the flanks while using elephants to strike fear into the hearts of the enemy in order to disorganize their attack and make them run.

Halo 2 Hands On 05:49 pm - Apache - consoles: xbox (0 comments)
IGN is over at the Leipzig Game Convention in Germany and took Halo 2 for a little spin:

Coming from a heavy PC gaming background, I've never really taken to first-person shooters on the consoles because the control scheme just hasn't lived up to the mouse and keyboard combo that I'm most fond of. However, with that said, Halo has long been my favorite console FPS because the controls just feel right. It's the kind of game where you can just pick up the controller and every button does exactly what you think it should. Luckily, Bungie stuck to the adage "it if ain't broke, don't fix it," as Halo 2 controls pretty much just like the original. Even the addition of dual guns didn't change the control setup much, and the controls are very intuitive as the left trigger will squeeze off a few rounds of the weapon in your left hand.

MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf MP Impressions 05:45 pm - Apache - consoles: xbox (0 comments)
Xbox.IGN shot out some hands on impressions of the multiplayer portion of MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf. Here's a snip:

So OK, you're smaller and everything else is bigger. Nice. What else? You now have a range of mechs to pilot. The range has drastically grown in number but it's also grown in variety and depth. You can drive the standard, well-rounded mech you've already familiarized yourself with in MechAssault, or you can hop out to get a taste of the new mech Kool-Aid. The nifty new Battle Armor, the smallest of the armory, is naturally quick, lightly armored, and nimble. In it, you'll be able to grab onto a VTOL (a Vertical Take-off and Land dropship), and while hanging below it, you can turn to face any enemy and shoot any of your weapons. This plays into the game's new cooperative multiplayer spirit; you work with teammate to defeat enemy in a variety of new and surprisingly well-thought out ways.
Here's more from Gamespy.

Viacom Buying Midway? 05:35 pm - Apache - games: general news (0 comments)
A story at IGN suggests that media giant Viacom may be looking to buy Midway, an old school arcade/console publisher. To pick up its PC biz, they recently signed Epic Games for a few upcoming Unreal Tournament titles. Here's more:

After posting losses for 18 consecutive quarters, Midway finally saw a turnaround in 2003 when David Zucker was appointed CEO. Boosted also by the success of recent titles like The Suffering and NBA Ballers, the company expects to post a profit in Q4 of this year.

While it may be hasty to assume Viacom will purchase Midway, such an acquisition would make for some interesting licensing opportunities, given that Viacom owns Nickelodeon and MTV, both rife with lucrative properties. Purchasing Midway would almost certainly have repercussions for companies like THQ, which has produced games based on several of Viacom's Nickelodeon licenses.

WarCraft III Bonus Map-o-the-Week 02:15 am - Apache - games: real-time strategy (2 comments)
Blizzard's new official bonus map release for WarCraft III is called Excavation Site: "With the help of Gazlowe's engineers, an unexplored city was recently excavated near Durotar. Quickly secure the gold mines in the center before your enemies do." It's a medium sized map that comes in at 246K.

Halo 2 Weekly Update 01:36 am - Apache - consoles: xbox (0 comments)
This week's official Halo 2 update is up over at HBO:

There are tons of new effects in the game that give it a new layer of flavor. Water, for example is a lot more detailed, while particle effects like the aforementioned dust and smoke add atmosphere and gameplay subtleties in equal measure. On one early level, the addition of distant buildings, telegraph poles and overhead wires and cables makes an astonishing improvement to an already pretty level. I often find myself pausing the game and just checking things out. More than cool looking, the buildings and objects look convincing, like this is a real, working city in the 24th century. Albeit one that's been smashed all to hell by marauding Covenant scum.
They also talk about the challenges of making it playable on a 733MHz Xbox processor.

Infinium Labs Spotlight 01:25 am - Apache - consoles: general news (6 comments)
A story on IT Managers Journal called Phantom game console works, but does the company's business plan? takes a look at exactly that. Here's a pinch (thanks Robin):

The Phantom game console hardware is the big problem here. Each unit is going to cost Infinium at least $300 to manufacture, and by the time you add in the fancy keyboard/mouse assembly, the licensing cost of its Windows XP-embedded operating system, plus custom software installation, packaging, and shipping, the total per-unit expenditure is likely to be closer to $400 than $300. But let's be generous and peg the final cost of each Phantom console, assembled and delivered, at $300. That means if a customer signs up for the two year plan, hardware costs will suck up the first 10 months of income generated by each $30/month subscription ($300). That leaves only 14 months ($420) remaining to pay all of the bandwidth, server, and game acquisition costs for the life of the two-year basic subscription.

The Saga of Ryzom Beta Re-Opening 01:19 am - Apache - games: mmog (2 comments)
Nevrax, a Paris based develpment studio, let us know that it will be re-opening the beta applications for its upcoming massively multiplayer role playing game - The Saga of Ryzom on August 30. Here's the dirt:

"When we took Ryzom back into closed beta, we promised that we would re-open the testing prior to release and invite everyone from the community back," said David Cohen Corval, CEO of Nevrax. "We are pleased to be able to honor our promise and look forward to this final period of Open Beta."

Nevrax also announced today the details of a special advanced test server that will be opening when the game launches in North America. The advanced test server will be where all new features will be tested there before being live, and advanced testers will be the first to try out new missions and other updates.

"The closed tests we've done this summer have proven invaluable in balancing and improving Ryzom, " explained Mr. Cohen Corval. "By inviting the most dedicated of our fans to play in this special server after launch, we will be able to continue to receive the input and testing we need to manage Ryzom ."

On a related note, PC.IGN is sporting a feature about the game's art.
