Alex Carver: Futurebrighter Announced - briefly
    (hx) 02:11 PM EDT - Aug,08 2004 - Post a comment
Polish based developer Heaven X sent us a press release announcing Alex Carver: Futurebrighter, the upcoming first-person action shooter for the PC. The game is currently slated to arrive on store shelves in 2005. Here's some info:
Futurebrighter is a FPP action shooter game taking place on unknown frontiers of a distant univers. The player takes the role of a convicted anti-hero Alex Carver, who performs various missions challenging both reflex and tactical skills. There will be an opportunity to execute missions in few different environmental locations, such as interstellar prison ship and surface of mystery planet ruled by demagoging dicatator. Very often a success of a mission will depend on tactics, reflex and use of enemy premises and vehicles.

Taking the role of a convict Alex Carver, the player is armed with a massive arsenal including pistols, sniper rifles, machine guns, plasma rifles and rocket launchers. Our hero is also given Implants, which can improve character's parameters (like accuracy, health, or speed), and Equipment, which includes flashlights, radar, sonar, med-kits, drugs (stimulators), various explosives & grenades, and other non-firing weapons, which can be used during missions.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Preview - preview
    (hx) 05:16 AM EDT - Aug,08 2004 - Post a comment / read (3)
GameSpot has posted a new preview of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the next iteration in the globally successful Grand Theft Auto franchise. This time they take a look at some of the locations in the game. Here's a taster:
    The Freeway
New to the Grand Theft Auto experience are the twisting freeways that will serve as your rapid conduit through and around the city, as well to San Andreas' other major cities of San Fierro and Las Venturas. If nothing else, the Los Santos freeway will be a welcome timesaver--local street traffic can often delay your trip from one place to another. If you're trying to get somewhere in a hurry (and what street thug isn't), the freeways will be the way to go. In case you were wondering, Rockstar assures us the traffic on Los Santos' freeways will never be as bad as the standstills you see on those of the real Los Angeles.

Unlike in previous Grand Theft Auto games, if you do keep to the city streets, you'll get a little extra navigating help in the form of street signs that you can use to locate buildings by their actual addresses. Unlike in the cities Liberty and Vice, Los Santos' streets actually have names, and you'll need to pay close attention to names and intersections if you want to really learn your way around the place.

Clearly, Los Santos is a big place, and a seedy one as well. How will you blend in with the locals and find your place in the criminal hierarchy? Read on to find out one way you'll be able to carve out your own identity in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

    Dungeons & Dragons Online Q&A; - interview
    (hx) 03:52 PM EDT - Aug,07 2004 - Post a comment
GameSpy has posted a Q&A with several members of Turbine Entertainment as they talk about Dungeons & Dragons, their upcoming online role-playing game which will be published by Atari. Here is a taster:
Moderator: Do you think that there will ever be a substitute for face-to-face, pen and paper role-playing?

Dan Ogles: Not until we successfully get artificial intelligence that can compete with the human brain. And that won't be anytime soon.

Pete MacDonald: I hope not. Like my daddy always said: "If it ain't broke don't substitute it with ... something else ... not broken." But I do I hope online gaming will replace sitcoms and reality shows.

Dave Eckelberry: All depends on your definition of substitute. For me, nothing will take the place of sitting down with friends face-to-face, killing a dragon, and eating a pizza. On the other hand, there are more people playing online fantasy games right now than playing pen and paper RPGs.

Ed Stark: Substitute? No. Complement? Yes. I think that technology will continue to advance so that player and DM interaction through a computer will become easier and more dynamic until people who can't play in the same room can share almost the same experience over the Internet. We aren't there yet -- we still need to rely on the computer's intelligence and preprogrammed responses to run our games quickly -- but I think we're taking steps in that direction. I'd like to see a game experience where the computer does all the "hard" or "slow" stuff for the DM and the DM and the players are left having all the fun.

I've noticed over at X-Bit Labs, that Intel announced product discontinues plan for its original Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition microprocessor that was unveiled during IDF Fall 2003. The last product discontinuance order date for the chip is 19th of November, 2004. MoH Pacific Assault; Operation Flashpoint 2 Delayed - briefly
    (hx) 06:39 AM EDT - Aug,07 2004 - Post a comment / read (4)
According to the official Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault website, the game has been pushed back to a November release:
EA has listened to the feedback of critics and consumers who have played an early build of Medal of Honor Pacific Assault; their high expectations encouraged us to add some extra time to the development schedule in order to add new features and an extra coat of polish to the game. Medal of Honor Pacific Assault will now ship in November of this year. Be sure to check the official site for more information as it becomes available.
Also the official Operation Flashpoint 2 website has been updated with another updated release date for Bohemia Interactive Studios' upcoming shooter sequel. The game is now slated for release in "Spring 2006".

    Psychonauts Q&A; - interview
    (hx) 09:06 PM EDT - Aug,06 2004 - Post a comment
GameSpot has posted a Q&A with Double Fine's Tim Schafer (the guy who worked on Day of The Tentacle, Curse of Monkey Island, and Grim Fandango) as he talks about Psychonauts, their upcoming action game for publisher Majesco. Here is an excerpt:
GS: What impact do you hope Psychonauts makes on game players?

TS: I hope it changes people's expectations for games, especially regarding originality and story. People say players don't want story in games, but I think that's because what they've gotten so far is bad story. I hope to give them good story so they realize that they can enjoy it!

Also, creatively speaking, we're really going for it with this game; I mean we are not trying to be timid. We're putting the crazy stuff in there. And I hope that inspires other developers to do likewise, to make their games more unique and personal to themselves, so that we get more variety in games. I'm tired of seeing games that look like they could have been developed by any studio, anywhere. When Psychonauts comes out, I want people to say, "Man, only Double Fine could have made that game." And really, I want it to be that way for all games and all studios. I have a dream, GameSpot, I have a dream.
Neverwinter Nights 2 First Details - interview
    (hx) 06:45 PM EDT - Aug,06 2004 - Post a comment
PC.IGN has posted an interview (in unusual article format) with Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart and Producer Darren Monahan and BioWare Joint CEOs Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk as they reveal first details about what we can expect from Neverwinter Nights 2, their upcoming role-playing game. Here is a taster:
While the single-player experience should allow for dozens of hours of gameplay alone, Obsidian is keeping true to the vision of the original and making sure that the multiplayer experience is just as deep and refined. They're even looking into ways to add to the multiplayer side of the game. "A lot of what we're looking at is what some of the MMOs are doing now and how to incorporate the good points of that into the online experience," Darren told us. "The best way to describe it is a micro-MMO idea. There are a lot of Neverwinter players who have persistent world servers up now, and we're looking at these guys and seeing that they've built some pretty interesting stuff. These guys are running four or five servers that you can play across -- how do we make it so the community can set this up in an easy way?" However, just because Obsidian is looking toward massively-multi player games for some inspiration, the multiplayer experience in Neverwinter Nights 2 will not require a monthly fee to play as the servers are set up by players instead of having central servers for the game.
Jagged Alliance 3D news - briefly
    (hx) 04:39 PM EDT - Aug,06 2004 - Post a comment
The chaps over at CRPG.ru (thanks RPGCodex) have passed along some info about Jagged Alliance 3D and where MISTland is headed with it. Here's all the info:
"Strategy First" has accepted design documentation for the game, so we have contacted with Yaroslav Astakhov - head of the developers team and he has provided some details:

    - The story takes place in Africa in 1990-s

    - There's no final decision on looting yet - whether dead enemies will retain all their equipment or not.

    - Actual work will be started in september, and release date will be announced later.

    • PDAs under attack - Backdoor.Brador.A virus - Kaspersky Labs has detected Backdoor.WinCE.Brador.a, the first backdoor for PDAs running under PocketPC (based on Windows CE). Brador is a classic Trojan backdoor program: it opens the infected machine for remote administration. Brador is 5632 bytes in size and it infects handhelds running Pocket PC. After the backdoor is launched, it creates an svchost.exe file in the Windows autorun folder, thus maintaining full control over the system every time the handheld is turned on. Brador then identifies the machine's IP address and sends it to the author, informing him that the handheld is in the Internet and the backdoor is active. Finally, Brador opens port 2989 and awaits further commands.
    • Image flaw pierces PC security - Six vulnerabilities in an open-source image format could allow intruders to compromise computers running Linux and may allow attacks against Windows PCs as well as Macs running OS X. The security issues appear in a library supporting the portable network graphics (PNG) format, used widely by programs such as the Mozilla and Opera browsers and various e-mail clients. The most critical issue, a memory problem known as a buffer overflow, could allow specially created PNG graphics to execute a malicious program when the application loads the image.
    • US prosecutors challenge P2P companies - P2P software companies have been told to clean up their act and do more to protect their users from the seedier side of the file-sharing scene - or risk facing legal action. The huddle of lawyers essentially wants P2Pers to block porn, unauthorised MP3 files, viruses, spyware and the like. At the very least, they say, P2P companies should do more to warn users of the dangers of mis-using their software - including the risk of prosecution from the states the legal eagles represent.
    • Net attacks make SP2 key for Windows XP - Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said the upgrade, dubbed Service Pack 2 or SP2, revises less than 5 percent of the millions of lines of code that make up Windows XP -- but adds more value than any update the company has ever done. Some of the nearly $1 billion that's gone into Service Pack 2 also will be used on future versions of Windows. But Gates said it was absolutely necessary to give away the security advances now because of the barrage of attacks plaguing Windows-based computers. The long-awaited update is due to be completed very soon, Microsoft senior product manager Matt Pilla said. He said the company could not be more specific on the time. In order to easily obtain Windows XP Service Pack 2 Microsoft will ship at no cost SP2 CDs. This is great news for those of us who don't have broadband, but most importantly this will help to secure a large amount of consumer desktops
    • Nvidia's NV43 is Geforce 6600 - The NV43 will be known as the Geforce 6600 from now on. There will be two versions - a 6600 standard and a 6600GT with a huge difference in clock speed. <> 6600 standard will be clocked at 300MHz+ and will use DDR/DDR2 memory while the 6600GT will be clocked close to 500MHz core and will use almost that fast memory, GDDR3. It's an eight pipeline part like we suggested before and will be available in volume production in late September.
    • First Details About ATI R520 Emerged - ATI Technologies' upcoming visual processing unit does not only have its code-number R520 (not R500, as initially thought), but also has its code-name, the web-site claims. Apparently, the chip is called Fudo, probably after the Japanese god of fire and wisdom, as Babynamenetwork web-site describes the name. ATI's current-generation graphics chips
